So today I was in my local Kroger trying to figure out which beer to try. While looking around, I noticed someone pick up a six pack, walk right over to another six pack and switch one of his beers for one in the six pack still on the shelf. At first I was in a ".... CAN I DO THAT?!" state of shock until I saw a "To keep prices fair, please do not mix six packs." sign on the wall. I then watched the guy continue to walk around and switch around a beer for a beer with four other six packs, walk off, and I'm guessing was able to get his mix six through the self checkout.

Has anyone on here done this? What are your thoughts on it?

That's why DFH started making different caps.

I can see how that'd help when going through a normal cashiered checkout, but in a self checkout where you only show a cashier your ID and they don't look at your beer, how does that help?

It doesn't. If people were just honest, it wouldn't be a problem. Ruins it for a lot of other people.

I've been to stores where you cannot purchase alcohol in self checkout. That could certainly help.

So in theory you could pick up a six pack of 7.29 Budweiser, take all the Bud out and replace them with expensive beer and still only pay 7.29 for it all because its self checkout ? Wow, thats crazy. Its basically stealing.

You can do anything you want, long as you get away with it. But remember, just cuz the cops don't catch you, doesn't mean that the karma police won't.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that huge chain grocery stores don't have 120 and WWS in their inventory.

From one standpoint: there's a sign explicitly prohibiting it, so it's kind of dick.
On the other, there have been times where I have been tempted to do the same. Mind you, I was explicitly not switching things of different prices (and the couple of times I did, there was no sign explicitly prohibiting it, but I've been chastised at the register before), but if I really wanted to sample something but didn't want to buy a whole six pack I've bought a sixer of something else I like from the same brewery and just swapped one for what I wanted to sample.
If I liked it, I came back and bought a full six pack of that at a later date. Yeah it's against the rules but I also speed from time to time, and yeah it can create problems for inventory, but the few times I did it it was at the kind of place that wouldn't notice that kind of discrepancy anyway
Yeah it's kind of a dick move, but in all honesty, sometimes I've allowed my selfishness to shine through

There are so many places with mix a six that I see no point in even thinking about doing that. Even if you get away with it, you're hurting the breweries as well as the next consumer. If I go to the store for a six pack of Two Hearted I'm sure as hell not going to buy one with a goddamn Budweiser stuck in there. So that beer sits and potentially goes unsold. It's just not a good pratice.

I suppose as long as you know you're a prick it's all ok, right?

I would have told the manager or someone before he made off with it. Grab the intercom handset..."Flaming douche needs assistance on the beer isle please."

I saw that same guy punch in 1 donut at self check for a bag of eight chocolate croissants. It is the old unintended consequences of trying to robotize things that need human intelligence.

It's a dick move plain and simple what you do as well. If you want to try one beer then go somewhere that sells singles like everyone else or trade someone for a single. If I ask my wife to pick me up a sixer of something when she is at the store. She is not a beer drinker and doesn't pay attention so buys me five + the one someone like you or like ericreynolds saw swapped in then I get screwed... SO, don't do it!

I once switched 3 Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin for 3 Little Somethin Wilds. There was a guy standing there in the beer section trying to decide what to try and once he saw me switch, he grabbed the 2nd 6 pack with 3 of each and bought it. So I like to think that I helped him with his decision!

Once I also found a Sierra Nevada Stout in my Sierra Nevada Pale Ale 6 pack. A nice little surprise if I don't say so myself!

But don't worry, I was already aware that I'm a dick so it makes it OK!

There is really no debate here. It is downright wrong. Besides it screwing up the store's inventory and, unless the prices are identical, it being theft, imagine getting home and finding out your six pack does not contain the beers you wanted? Remember, you aren't the only person buying beer, someone is going to be stuck with the remnants of the beers you didn't want.

Now if a store wants to put singles on the shelf and let you pick that is great, but as is keep the beers in their respective packages.

Hopefully he introduced some unexpected victim to a great new beer with his shenanigans at least.
