so your buddy comes out of your basement with one of your last Black Notes(or place favorite limited beer here) in hand and says something along the lines of, "man this is pretty good, tastes a lot like guinness." how do you react? i dont ask because it happened but its just a thought i had due to my beer fridge being pretty fair game when people are over which is quite often. all my real good stuff is put away and i do share it but i do have things like Lagunitas Sucks and some tougher to find Shorts in my fridge. most of my friends enjoy a good beer and i like getting them into new beer anyway but its something i thought was an interesting question.

I react by replacing him with a better friend.

What I like to think I'd do: "Let me get you a glass for that. Mind splitting it with me? It's one of my favorites and my last one." (completely sincere)

What I'd most likely actually do: "Let me get you a glass for that. Can I have half? That was my last one." (sarcastic and begrudgingly)

I'm really trying to tell myself that no matter what I have in the cellar its just beer and I'll get over it. Not quite there yet, but the end goal is in sight.

Well, if your fridge is game for your friends, and he thought it was good stuff, I am not seeing what the problem here is. Good beers are meant to be shared in the company of good folks who appreciate the good stuff.

I have definitely done the former though most of my friends are as big beer geeks as I am so there is definitely a chance it could happen in the other direction as well. But in the end, everyone is pretty cool about it and it is only beer.

This literally almost happened verbatim your story. Bought a 4 pack of Black Note and had it in my friend's fridge. Another friend comes over and emerges from the kitchen with one and asks, "where is the bottle opener."

I begin to commend him on his good tase, casually gaze out the window, do a double-take and exclaim, "DEAR GOD WHAT'S THAT??!?"

Then, when he steps past me to look out the window, he gets two bullets in the back of the head.

If you dont want that happening the solution is simple - dont make that beer accessible to them, otherwise its on you.

I do like the idea about splitting it with them if you do "catch them in the act".

I don't imagine ever having this problem. None of my friends would just arbitrarily go into my fridge/basement and grab a beer without asking or being specifically offered to. Nor would I just go into a fridge and grab someone else's beer without doing the same.

I had a four-pack of Heady Topper in the fridge the day of a little gathering, and a bunch of cans of other stuff for general consumption out in a cooler. My cousin grabs one and cracks it open. Oops. I just made him split it with a friend who would appreciate it more. No big deal.

I have to continuously remind friends that the fridge is fair game for the exact opposite reason. It seems like they are afraid to drink my "good" beer.

I don't think I'd be too upset if it were something I had put away. The only beer I really cabinet is beer I'm just waiting to drink with someone else.

My roommate brought over the SN Hoptimum I'd given him to a friend's house for 4th of July. He'd never had it. He put it in the fridge and was saving it while he cracked a few other beers first. Later, when he went to retrieve it, he found it missing. He asked around, and a friend who's pretty clueless to craft brews says "Yeah man, I tried that. It tasted like shit so I poured it out!"

I don't even understand how this can happen. Fuck this "it's only beer" shit, you need to slap your "buddy" and tell him to check himself before he wrecks himself.

I would open a Guinness and see if he still thought they tasted similar. If so, I would drink the Blacknote and give him the Guinness. If he liked the Blacknote better I would split it with him. Really have never owned a beer that I wouldn't mind splitting with any of my friends. Closest would be beer I brought home from vacations (Pliny, Jai Alai, etc) but even then It usually just makes it more fun.

If it is in the fridge it is fair game. I have no problem sharing my beer with whomever is over.
My friends know I have good beer and will ask What I have that is good or new.

I had this happen to me last spring. I was only bought one six pack of Nugget Nectar and saved my last bottle for a while. It was in the farthest possible spot in the back of the fridge. Friend comes over, asks if he can grab a beer (about a dozen or more in there) and comes out drinking, from the bottle, my last NN. I didn't say anything because I didn't warn him that was the only bottle I was saving. No more NN was able to be purchased at stores :slight_frown:

In a case or more rare beer whoever said the splitting it idea is spot on with being both nice and wanting to enjoy your beloved beverage.
