I was thinking the other day about WHY I am into craft beer. At first, the answer seemed obvious--I like good beer. But as I thought about it more, I wondered if there might be a second reason that craft beer is a hobby of mine--perhaps an even GREATER reason than enjoying the beer itself: for the thrill of the hunt.

I thought for a minute: What if God came to me and said, "I've just made the PERFECT beer according to your unique preferences. You can have as much of it as you want, for the rest of your life, and you will never get tired of it." Would I ONLY drink that beer here on out? Or would I keep trying new beers, just for the sake of getting to explore new territory, even KNOWING that I will NEVER find a beer as good as I've already got?

So bottom line: Do you drink beer SOLELY for enjoyment of the drink itself? Or do you feel that craft beer is more so an avenue for adventure and exploration?

Is the beer good because the gods like it, or do the gods like it because it's good?

I wish I could boo you pun.

I would say exploration. That's why I got into beer in the first place. If I saw a beer I never had I would try it. It's just my personality. Why have something you have already ha when you can try something new. Unfortunately when I started out I was going to places that had faux craft but I always liked the more flavorful brews. And now here I am drinking a cask of death by hops with el dorado hops and cherrywood. Fing delicious.

I usually try not to drink when I'm tripping acid.

i have a hard time buying a sixer of something I have already had when there is so much more out there I've yet to try. Maybe its because I am new to the craft beer world and have only tried a little over a hundred different brews, but I feel like this feeling of "need new beer" is not going to fade.

I was exactly the same way. It's a good way to "flatten the curve," so to speak. I had no idea what a Belgian Pale Ale was a few months ago... or even the terminology associated with the processes of brewing. But vocabulary does not a beer advocate make. Trying new beer is about as adventurous as I get. I'm not by nature, a risk taker. I figure though, with craft beer, even a mistake can still be good.

Two Hearted already exists, but I do still like variety on occasion.

To the OP- right about now there are at least a few dozen beers that I know of which are 'perfect according to my preferences', so accepting only one of them would be a gyp. I got a good thing goin' on, what with revisiting faves and trying some occasional new things, and I believe I'll keep it that way.

Monty Python's Philosopher's Song. Classic, and a little obscure. Excellent.

When I lived a mere 200 yards from the Schlenkerla tavern, I rarely spent an evening drinking anywhere else....

I'm probably showing my age with that one, but it wasn't that obscure with my age group . Glad to hear it's still known, though; definitely a classic.

Variety is the hop of life. It's why I switched from bourbon to beer.

    I HATE the hunt.

That's why I like it the way it used to be in the past, for example, when availability was easier for many beers.
