Every time I send out a box for a trade, I try to make my trade partner as happy as possible. Unfortunately, due to space restrictions, this sometimes leads to a trade-off: do I send beers from their wants list that may be less acclaimed, or do I send beers that they have had before and loved?

I guess it is important to feel the other person out to see if they seem more like a "ticker" (in which case I'll send some wants) or if they seem more like a pleasure drinker (in which case I'll send the beer they have already enjoyed). I understand that I can always ask them which they prefer, but I like the element of surprise.

As a newer trader, I'm seeking some advice. Assuming you have to make a choice, do you send something from your trade partner's wants list that may have lower reviews or do you send something your partner has tried before and enjoyed? Conversely, when you open a box, which do you prefer to receive?

Unless you know that they really loved the beer you are thinking of sending, want more, and can't easily get it, don't send them something they've had before.

I generally agree with Etan on this one. I've traded with a few people that also caveats on their profile indicating that they'd like beers they've reviewed over a 4.0 and so forth.

Sometimes you run the risk of sending something they love, and have already stocked up on as many as they want of said beer; I wouldn't want to do that personally.

Personally I enjoy receiving locals from breweries that have not started to distribute or have a small range of distribution or that people may not have heard of and I usually send the same.

    Ie for Cali

    Bootleggers
    Tap it
    Beachwood
    Strands
    Logdon

    Wants > Great locals > Highly-rated Hads

If I can't hit Wants, then I hit as many great locals before I go for liked Hads.

If it is something I really liked it usually stays on my want list even though I had it already. Locals that I never heard of are always an awesome extra as well, I love trying new stuff.

I like new things before things I've loved but had. I do agree with channels though, if I really like something it will stay on my wants after I've had it.

The beers that I've had before, that I'd be happy receiving as an extra again, I keep on my wants list.

I try to send extra's I'd be happy to receive while keeping in mind location, availability and if it is listed with their "wants". Lately I've been trying to get-out Pipework brews (Cause they are f@#king killing it) and stuff from my personal stash I know folks will enjoy. I also get regular boxes from my cousin in Alabama so I spread that wealth around as well.

Go with wants. For all you know they're sitting on 6 bottles of that highly-rated had. It doesn't mean they wouldn't appreciate it, but wants are typically things they either haven't had yet, or have had and are seeking more of it.

That said, I prefer to go with awesome locals as extras. I know my market better than outsiders, and there are lots of beers that I would call "should wants", whereby if they knew about the beer, they would want it. So I usually go with "should wants", which are usually better than half the stuff on their wants list.

This is generally what I subscribe to as well. If I can't hit wants, I'll at least send some locals with a lower distribution I personally enjoy that are in their favorite style (s) because personally that's what I'd prefer. I've had some seriously great beers that were completely off my radar that were sent as extras. Sure any beer I've rated highly I can't buy at home is always welcome, but I'd prefer to try something new and possibly great.

I am of the opinion that "extra's" should be used to rep your local breweries.

Wants first, when possible. No one ever complains when you extra them some Wants.

Extras are extras. Anything is welcome.
Opening a box without extras leaves me feeling like a wolf that has overtaken a sleigh only to find no russian peasants on board.

Personally I'm of the opposite opinion of everyone else I suppose. Yes, I try to hit Wants if I can, but I personally would want to receive more highly rated Hads over beers that I've not checked in yet for a couple of reasons:
    1. I don't really check most of what I've had in, at least not here.
    2. If I had something and rated it really highly, I want to have it again.
    3. I am clearly not a ticker.

i'm kind of on the fence, but i lean more toward this. for various reasons i was just thinking of drake's aroma coma... if you had a bottle of like week old aroma coma, and you were thinking "should i send pahn that, or this bottle of dark lord [i for some reason know] he's never had," i'd hope you send me the drake's.

I just got done packing up a box. Extras accounted for probably close to half the weight. I typically will look at Wants and hit them if possible. Or, I have no problem just sending stuff I like. What I think is really helpful is when people list stuff they DON'T like...then I know what beers/styles not to send. Other than that, I just load up the box.

I did enjoy the last box I got from a trader in Colorado sent me two cans of Heady Topper as extras. It's on my all time list, and it's awesome...but dude...I live in Vermont...don't be sending me your precious cans of Heady!
