With so many brewers putting out session beers these days, how\why do you drink them? For me, I'm not an outdoors type, not one to stay at bars for more than a few hours, and don't really go to parties where either being tipsy isn't part of the scene or that last so long I can't control myself. I have run across two recent times where a session ale seemed appropriate.

My typical beer bar visit might last 3 or so hours, where I might have 3 or 4 standard to high ABV beers. At a beer bar the other night, after 3 or 4 high abvs and some good convo with the bartender, I was ready to go home (disclaimer, I live in NYC and do not drive, so DD is never a concern for me), when the bartender said he'd buy my last round. I was feeling kind of tipsy at the time and didn't want to really get shitfaced, but I also didn't want to turn down his kindness. So I saw Evil Twin Bikini Beer, and boy at 2.7% that was tasty!

The other situation was GF and I were up in Waterbury VT hitting the Pro Pig/Resevoir/Blackback circuit. At the start of the night, she wanted a cocktail so we went to Pro Pig. I didn't want a cocktail, but knew we had a long day of drinking ahead of us, so I didn't want to waste ABV. Bam, Hopfentsark Alexanderplatz Berliner Weiss, 3% tart awesomeness.

So how do you drink your session beers, assuming you do.

I brewed 15 gallons of a 3.5% ABV beer for an employee party several years ago. People drank it with the expectation that it would be strong because it was dark and had lots of hop flavor. They were actually slurring their speech after 2 or 3 pints, but it was purely psychological. The night before my wife, daughter and I had all had 6 or 8 pints of this beer and didn't even argue, that never happens when my 2 women drink too much.
Since then I try to keep at least one homebrew under 5% on tap and I almost never serve or let my friends drink my strong beers during parties.

If you are going to be doing something during the day while drinking and dont want to get super sleepy by late afternoon.

Living in Florida, I love me a good berliner weisse. Fortunately, there are a few brewers around here who basically always have it on tap or for growlers

i like to drink these before i have to go to special events, such as family gatherings, weddings, work meetings, that way i can have beer before i have to leave, and not smell or act like ive been boozing.

I'm not even sure what the point of sessionable beers is. The calories alone are a disincentive to drinking low ABV beers all day long.

I love having session beers around because I don't always want to open a bomber of 10% beer.

I find a session beer to be low alcohol and something you can drink on all day... Maybe our definitions are different though.

A session beer is my typical average standard beer. I drink those more than high ABV beers. That probably puts me in the minority around here but whatever.

Actually I don't session, I drink what I like and want, if they're higher in ABV I limit it to 2-3, at ballgames and such. But if I was going to make a day of drinking beer it would probably be Miller Lite, and I'd let my wife drive, DUI is way to serious. Drinking 10 4% brews and thinking your safe might not be true.

Yes thats what I would say. I mean, a lot of times you just wanna drink 3 or 4 delicious beers and dont want to be buzzed or drunk.

Actually, I just enjoy session beers because I can enjoy a few with limit impairment... I drink beer for the enjoyment of the taste not because I am looking to get drunk.

The poll is missing a very critical option: When you want the taste/refreshment of a tasty beverage without getting drunk. This answer covers all of the other poll options. Whether it be at a bar/pub, out at a party, or some outdoor activity, there are times when a beer will taste so damn good but you don't have the option of letting yourself get drunk.

^it also misses multiple selections. I'd select three here, plus Kinsman's selection. I would also select "when I want to drink a beer with less than 300 calories because I'm turning into a giant fatty."
