this style of beer has grown on me quite a bit over the past year or so, i know sometimes its hit or miss but i'm really open to trying anything even if i'm not that familiar with the brewery. i'd love to hear what you guys recommend, i'm sure there's a lot out there that are great, maybe i haven't heard of them yet or haven't had a chance to see them on the shelves in jersey or new york. but what do you think is worth trading for or trying to find on the east coast?

so far i've had sucaba, bigfoot (still looking for a barrel aged one), i have a bottle of a cockeyed cooper i haven't cracked yet, still sitting on an old numbskull as well. i had the 3 sheets from ballast point on draft the other night and that was great. so at this point i really enjoyed all of them, nothing was too strong or just off putting to me so i definitely want to seek out more ! hows the behemoth from three floyds? i know bolt cutter is out there too but i didn't wanna chip out $25 for it, i'm sure its a solid beer but maybe i can trade for something like that down the line

Along the lines of Sucaba: Insanity, for sure. Victory Oak Horizontal should also be around. Get 'em while they last.

Central waters bbbw is solid IMO. Its easy to get in Wisconsin but hard almost every where else.

I am enjoying my first Lower de Boom and at first I thought it to be a little off putting with a metallic flavor( canned ). But after letting it sit that went away and I really enjoy the fruit and hops.

I really enjoyed Olde School from DFH. I agree about BW's, I'm becoming addicted to them. I did not like oak smoked old guardian, fwiw.

Behemoth is great, light in color and malt profile, and very hoppy. Try Stone Old Guardian also, and Old Ruffian from Great Divide.

I LOVE barleywine. Even more than stouts.

Well you've already had bigfoot. I hear Schells Barley Wine is good too. I picked up a 12 oz. single. I'm excited to try it. $10 a 6 pack is pretty good.

This is exactly what I was gonna recommend. One of my favorite barleywines. It's quite hoppy, which is pretty much why I like it so much. Also, Sunturnbrew by Nogne, Flying Mouflan (very unique and complex) by Troegs, Baronen by Hantverksbryggeriet, Samael's Ale by Avery and Weyerbacher Insanity are all top-notch.

If you want to shell out, I hear JW Lees is some of the best English BW you can get. I'm sitting on a 09 Harvest Ale and a Lagavulin BA Harvest Ale, but haven't opened any

I couldn't pull the trigger on Bolt Cutter either. It just didn't seem worth the $25. I have a hard enough time shelling out $15 for a special 750 mL. I enjoy a lot of the other ones mentioned here.

You might want to try, or at least try to acquire King Henry.

8 times out of 10, I favor the English-style variety over the American-style (ex, Sucaba vs. Bigfoot), but I enjoy both. If you liked Sucaba, make sure to snag a bottle or two of Double DBA from Firestone Walker when it's released this summer. As with Sucaba, it's awesome between 1-2 years. They call it an 'imperial special bitter', but yeah, it's an English-style barleywine. Also, not a huge fan of too many Southern Tier beers, but their Backburner barleywine is great and cheap at $7 a bomber. Also, at about $8 a bomber, Old Ruffian by Great Divide is an awesome American-style barleywine. J.W. Lees is really tasty (though I don't much care for the barreled variants), and I really liked Thomas Hardy's (they're supposedly bringing that one back) as well. Oh, and for an English-style brew that (with age) is fantastic and at a great price, North Coast's Old Stock. One last one (gotta give a local brew a shoutout!) is Schlafly's Oak-Aged barleywine, aged on new Missouri oak chips. Fresh, it tastes like licking a board that's had some whiskey poured over it, but at 2-3 years the heat fades, the oak recedes (but is still quite prominent) and it's glorious.

    Brooklyn's Monster Ale
DuClaw's Devil's Milk (they have a Barrel Aged version too, that I haven't yet tried, but the standard Devil's Milk is outstanding)
    Great Divide's Old Ruffian
Heavy Seas Below Decks Barleywine (I have two bottles from 2010 that I'm sitting on, one regular and one aged in bourbon barrels, and one from 2012 aged in cabernet barrels)
    Southern Tier's Backburner
    Weyerbacher's Blithering Idiot

These are all great, and some of my favorite beers!

Had a 2011 John Barleycon Barleywine Ale last week. Much tastier than the Bigfoot.
