Here are a few more reviews from the "other site":

    Assassin

And yes the majority of people reviewing are either from Iowa, Minnesota & Wisconsin.

Um, I didn't delete anything. You just responded to the wrong thread.

Yeah - I called you out. And I stand by it. If someone doesn't want to make a trade for a beer at the price requested, then that's the market. Fine. Markets adjust and are (at least reasonably) efficient.

But I thought your comments were negative (and ridiculous) when you haven't had the beer.

Seriously though - I hope you continue to feel this way. For my own selfish purposes, I'd much rather that you not drink limited release Toppling Goliath beers and that TG remain under the radar.

I don't understand how people can hate on something and haven't tried it, I've also noticed no one has came in here saying they've had it and it wasn't good or just alright. If you want to know why it's being highly regarded because it is that good! I live in Florida so you can throw out that Midwest bias argument here and it is incredibly good stuff, every sip only gets better and the maple in it is just amazing. Just because it wasn't aged in a barrel doesn't less it at all but hey haters gotta hate.

Its all truth! My review of morning delight will echo exactly what this BA has said.

I'd love to get a bottle of assassin but everyone is holding it hostage for whales. :|

anyone doubting Toppling Goliath, you are wrong. they make truly remarkable beers, both hoppy and stout and hopefully/eventually sour. I have not had one beer that wasn't amazing. if you want to hate on the hype, well you are wrong, if you want to hate that they are from somewhere rural and use that as a means to denigrate them and call them a flash in the pan brewery, well that is just ignorant, these guys are the real deal and they are here to stay.

personally I think it almost takes more skill to make a remarkable and distinguishable non barrel aged beer that can compete with all barrel aged beers. not many can truly contend against all of the big barreled beers.

I agree with this statement. I did not think that I would enjoy morning delight more than most overhyped barrel aged stout out there...but I did.

The butt hurt is coursing through my veins.

Seriously though... Never had a thing from TG. But I think we of all people should know that just because a brewery is relatively small or new doesn't always mean that they can't hang with the rest of 'em.

This reoccurring predicament seems to continue even though we all know this:

1.) the high marks that beers like these receive are largely generated by their local "homers"
2.) these reviews determine 87% of their initial trade value - no real way around that (except for the brewery's own credentials which, in this particular case, are far from lacking)
3.) once the beer is tested by that broader audience, thanks to those trades, a sometimes more realistic score is generated
4.) the perceived trade value is then adjusted
5.) different sorts of trades or made thereafter / a bunch more butt hurt surfaces

Am I missing something? There's no secret loophole in this chain of events.

Maybe these beers would change my life at its very core, or maybe they'd inspire some explosive diarrhea. Either way, my speculation is worthless without having had either of them -- and so is yours.

You left out the crippling fear among certain tickers that someone, somewhere, is having a great beer that they won't get to try. This usually manifests itself as inarticulate rage that other people might also want that beer and either (1) are willing to trade more for it than they are or (2) don't want to trade the bottles they already have. See above.

This sounds like those threads when Hill Farmstead started and everyone was calling all the people within a 2 state radius "homers". Just this time Levitation isn't here.

Decorah (where TG is located) is in the north east corner of IA, 36 miles from Wisconsin, and about 15 miles south of Minnesota. So they actually do have a 3 state radius to call "home"

I have had Assassin but not MD. One thing beyond the official reviews thus far that I haven't seen mentioned is what I was hearing after the GTMW last year. Out of the ridiculous quantity of amazing beers there the beer that I heard the most about and was saddest to have missed was MD. Given the buzz it got in an event filled with amazing beers like King Henry it's hard for me to believe it's not all it's cracked up to be.

I remember a similar conversation about how Central Waters Fifteen was just having its ratings inflated by homers and that once people from outside the area got it in trades the rating would plummet. That one is still sitting at 4.6 so...

Totally agree with this. Mornin' Delight was a highlight of the festival for most of the people that were lucky enough to try it. You can actually check it in the GTOMW message string. I don't think everyone was trying to jack up the trade value all the way back in August.

I had both of these yesterday thanks to a generous fella at DLD. They are both very good. Morning Delight, as said before, tastes like a mouthful of maple syrup soaked pancakes chased with a swallow of good coffee. Even then it wasn't close to being too sweet.

Bringing this thread back from the dead to point out I don't think we're going to see a 4.1 rating on these beers anytime soon. Although, I did thin the Assassin was a little overrated.
