You can skip the prose and answer the question in the title, if you want.

I have never been to a "real" bottle share. While I lived in CA I did in-home beer sampling with friends, generally trying things off the shelf (some things might be a little special, but nothing crazy or quasi-whalez). I had fun with these, as it was all for learning about/enjoying beer with friends. I know of bottle shares happening in my current city, and think it might be fun to participate on occasion, but I currently don't have anything formidable I may share. I have a little cellar that might have fun stuff in 1 or more years, but for 2013 I'm feeling SOL. I am not willing to trade (I want to but don't have the time; I might start in 2014), which some of you will guffaw at.

A cursory forum search found this post (well, part of it).
I want to do this, and do it "right".

What are good things to bring to a bottle share? I would think whalez and beer from other distribution regions are always OK. So besides those...
Is a shelf beer you love OK? What about something anyone in the area could have gotten a few months ago but now they can't (like a one-off run of 6 packs/bombers)? Is a great shelf beer you've cellared for X number of months (e.g. 12 or 30) OK?
Et cetera. An example is La Folie 2013: Anyone who tried when it released could've gotten it, now it's hard to find.

My goal would be to contribute to the bottle share in a better way than just bring the best (insert style here) the local market has to offer (unless I've cellared it for >1 year, maybe).
    Cheers!

Nah but really try to bring something your pretty sure will be unique and a first time or only a once in a while try for the fellow bottler sharers.

Whatever you do, don't bring Voodoo doughnut (like I may or may not have done).

Usually the host will set some parameters.. such as "bring 44 ounces" or whatever.

I'd say the beer itself tends to be of the white-whale variety, unless otherwise specified.

And usually someone will put together a list, like nsheehan is bringing beer x, BeastLU is bringing beer y, etc. etc. (Sometimes you can offer up a few things, and people will pick.)

Alls I really know is that bottle shares are awesome! :grinning:

Beer people (at least the good ones amongst us) are understanding that not everyone with whom we'd like to share our beer is going to have a knockout cellar immediately. Bring something that you currently consider special and explain to everyone you are just getting into bottle-sharing and looking to acquire more special stuff in the future. If they aren't willing to welcome you on those terms, you probably don't want to drink with them anyways.

Additionally, bring some killer food. Then you'll become the "chili lime buffalo wing guy" or the "guy who always brings the killer cheese" and everyone will always want you there regardless of whether you bring any bottles. I know one guy who makes homemade cheese and brings it to tastings. After tasting how good his cheese is, I doubt anyone really cares what bottles he brought.

This is meant to be fun, so try not to make it into something stressful.

I second the post above. You dont always have to bring "walez" or even something rare. Just bring something you think is good and want to share. The last share we had (which I'm hoping you'll come to eventually) I brought 3 bottles: 2 were good out of area distro beers and 1 was a beer not really rare or out of area but that I like and wanted to share. No one had an issue, and it got drank really fast.

I also think bringing food is a great idea. At least 1, if not more, people at our last share didnt even bring beer, but brought cool food options, which certainly is just as good! We all like eating while we drink!

And if you bring some La Folie, I'll drink the shit out of it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I'll come as soon as I can figure logistics and make the date (whenever one picked). Being new to Austin, I didn't know how north 'north Austin' is. I got the La Folie for my brother, but I have a feeling I'll end up not taking it to him (he's in MA so I'm bringing him Jester King for sure), in which case I would save it for a bottle share

I'd say chips. Or peanuts if you can't find chips. Just no cheeto's.

Your g/f specially if she doesn't like the same kind of beer you do then she can take a sip act like she hates it and give the rest to you plus if she likes any of it it should be a good time after:grinning:

Lol, the only beer she likes are the good sours (e.g. Beatification). And even that's borderline. She's usually the DD when I can convince her. But I like good times.
