So, just picked up a Stone RIS bomber today after work at a local bottle shop. It was bought sitting out in room temperature, and when I got home I set it on a counter top to eventually be put in the fridge. So, got to watching the NFL draft and like an hour later I hear this noise that sounded like someone threw something down in the house. Go to investigate, and my freaking Stone RIS bottle is separated completely at the base and beer is everywhere! Complete loss. What a freakin mess! . Is there some kind of science to this? Randomly cracking bottles? No drastic temp change. Happen to anyone else?

    Cheers!

Generally that kind of breakage is caused by a tiny crack/flaw in the bottle called a check. It happens when the molten glass comes in direct contact with the metal mold when being blown (Lack of coating on the mold) There are other causes to be sure, perhaps the bottle was banged against something metallic and sharp creating a small crack. When you subjected the bottle to the (rapid) pressure and temperature change it failed. Almost all of these kind of manufacturing defects are caught at the glass plant or at the bottling facility. But Sht happens.

I've dropped precious bottles, but never a bottle committing seppuku..... and when I read about an odd explosion either on the shelf or while opening, it's usually saisons/sours.

Just bought a bottle of that yesterday. Better keep an eye on it. haha

I've never had this happen, and I hope I never have it happen. Tragic waste of good beer.

On another topic, props to the thread starter for being a Seahawks fan. I am too. Excited for next season.

happens a lot more often then you think, at the bottle shop i work at from time to time bottles will just explode on the shelf for no reason. yesterday i had a bottle of rogue XS imperial stout crack cleanly in half vertically and was only held together by the cap. makes me tend to be a little weary when im stocking the beer wall. ive seen bottles pop and send glass shards flying across the store. not trying to be at eye level when that happens

This just happened with a Stone RIS on a local beer geek blog I follow as well...hope it's not a trend, cos I'd really like to hold on to my 2013...after I heard about the local issue, however, I threw mine in the fridge...I've had too many exploding bottles to risk another ruining clothes/carpeting in our closet/cellar

Wow. Crazy to hear this happens, and experience it first hand. So bizarre. After years of craft beer consumption, I've never had this happen till yesterday and hope it never happens again. Or if it does, please don't break between the oven and the fridge this time! Lol! Ugh. What a freaking mess.

I opened a bottle of nugget nectar this year and half of the top rim stayed in the cap. It broke off a piece that was about a half an inch down the neck of the bottle. Not sure what happened, i used my same trusty opener that I always do and i wasnt rough with it. I didn't notice any cracks before I opened it, but I'm sure there had to be something there. I still drank it.
