I also hate bars with electricity. Plumbing really pisses me off.

You are right. I can see it now during the days, or at quieter bars/lounge types. When I first replied, I was thinking of the louder "social" or "sports" types. Like I said, different types of bars for different scenes...

For the most part, if I am at a bar reading, I am probably waiting for friends, or for the boyfriend to get out of work to join me. Or I may have decided to head out alone, and enjoy a beer with a book for the hell of it. Sometimes i have a day off, and just say fuck it, I'm going out for a beer. No need to judge, we all sit at bars for different reasons. Also, as an artist, one of my favorite things to do is sit and draw in my sketchbook. So yes, I'm glad different bars cater to different types. However, I'm always going to opt for the place that doesn't have a television.

I don't watch TV at home, aside from programs on my computer, so seeing a television at a bar is almost as novel as being at a bar itself. In fact, going out to watch a game is in my top five reasons for going to a bar at all (just behind being with friends and trying out something new on draft.) This is especially true during the summer baseball season when there is a game almost every day. Go Tigers!

One aside, when I lived in Europe where soccer is basically the only sport shown in bars/pubs, I found that it made a really nice aesthetic on the wall. Soccer has no commercials so its basically like a pleasant grass green painting up on the wall that moves and carries interest if you are interested.

That said, if there is absolutely no game of any sort on to watch, I would never prefer to see muted (or un-muted) ESPN programs playing brightly in front of me while I drink. I might sound like a nerd or something but turn on the news, at least that might get some conversations going if it's a slow night.

I like TVs at a bar. It gives you something to look at if you aren't with people.

In addition my local pub plays international soccer/cricket/rugby matches and baseball/football (if it is on) on their TVs. I appreciate that. The only thing I appreciate even further, as a San Francisco Giants fan living in Seattle, is when they play my baseball team. That in itself is just tremendous for me.

Watching certain games on TV is one of only a very small number of reasons why I ever want to go to a bar. I've gotten rid of cable (i should get rid of TV altogether) at home, but like to follow certain teams. Bars are the most convenient place to watch the games.

If I'm out for a nice meal, I choose a place without a television.

I don't think any of the bars I drink in even has a TV. If I want to watch TV, I can sit at home.

I can take or leave TVs, I see the argument for both sides. My problem is, if the TV IS on you'll never hear the volume anyway so barkeep put something on that DOESN'T need volume. Sporting events don't NEED volume, if you do need it, stay home or go to a sports bar...it would be nice if there were more mellow lounge type places to all the sports bars. Sports bars are fine if you're there for the sports or some event but it would be nice to have something other than the corner, hole in the wall type places & sports bars. Oh wait, that's what home drinking is for, DUH!

How about stopping in for a cold one after work? I 'd rather watch a tv screen than have a conversation with my self, it might scare off other customers. I'm ok with it obviously.

I don't care either way. One bar I go to has a movie night and that is a riot. They show older movies. Ghostbusters, blazing saddles, ect..they just showed gremlins but I was unable to attend. But that is the only time I watch tv at a bar, I'd rather chat.

I've been to great bars without televisions, and great bars with many screens. Either can be enjoyable. My main pet peeve with bars and restaurants has to do with noise. If the volume of the music (or TV) is so loud that I can't hear the person across the table, I'm leaving.

I know that some who post here hate it but television is a big part of the beer culture in the USA. My local brew pub does not have a TV in the bar. People used to talk to each other a lot there. Used to but not so much now. Now it has WI-FI and everybody in on the internet. Some of whom are watching sports with out sound. Or posting on BA lol.

Televisions are only problematic if you let them be problematic. Moderation is the key - just like our delicious malt beverages. If I'm at a bar reading the paper, contemplating life, or just relaxing, I wouldn't mind a muted TV. The only bar I would go to avidly watch TV is a sports bar.

I know this is hard for some of you to accept, but there are a large number of us out there who equally enjoy watching sports and drinking great craft beer. Sorry to disappoint you.
