The best Hefe' is a straight up traditional. I don't see too many people trying to put a spin on this style, and when they do, it ends up ruining it or pretty much not being a hefeweizen altogether. The wheat and yeast are the stars here.

Long live the Hefeweizen, full of flavor. I'll take it over a BBA, Sour, or Hoppy beer any day.

I'm a fan. Just bought a sixer of SN Kellerweis 'cause I hadn't had it in forever. Great stuff.

There's actually a pretty good range within the traditional realm of hefeweizens, from pale to malty, and along the banana-clove spectrum. That definitely keeps it interesting, though I do prefer them straight down the middle myself (Paulaner).

There have been hoppy versions brewed recently, like the Schneider Hopfen-Weizen, but I just don't care for them.

I recently had a massive craving for a German wheat in a big, sexy weizen glass. Got a Weihenstephaner Hefe growler and served it in a matching glass. It was so awesome, I felt a little bad I had neglected the style for so long (caught up in the next big IPA like many others).

This makes me want a Weisswurstfruehstueck (German brunch of veal sausage, pretzel, and Weissbier) right now...

Probably not considered "traditional", but New Glarus makes an awesome clove/citrus/wheat flavored Dancing Man Wheat.

Besides New Glarus Dancing Man Wheat, I agree that a traditional hefe is the way to go. I even still enjoy Shiner's Hefe, although I haven't had it in a minute.. It's about that time of year though..

I can appreciate them for the traditional style. And I'll enjoy a few hefes on summer evenings. But it's just not my favorite style. I find many wheat beers to be waaaay too orangey. I'll have to try a few more now that the weather is getting nicer and reassess my opinion...

Try Weihenstephan or Ayinger. Not orange there.

Hefs are great and certainly now that it's getting hot in AZ. I prefer Weihen, Kellerweis, and Franziskaner and Paulaner is a great value in 12 packs but I think it's more of a "hef light". It also struck me that the flavor profile is a little similar to a sour when I was drinking a Kellerweis the other day so I would recommend to fans of sour beer if you haven't tried one. Happy Sunday all; I gotta do some more work around the house today before I "earn" another beer!

Dry Dock's Hefeweizen in CO and Live Oak's in Austin are both very good representations of the style.

Totally agree with hefes being great just the way they are. I.will say however there's a double hefe here in NJ by High Point (Ramstein) called Platinum coming in at 6.7. % alcohol and.its exceptional

Weihenstephaner and Paulaner make fantastic Hefes, as does Live Oak.
Haven't had either in a while, but Howling Wolf from Grand Teton and the Hefe from Wolf Creek in Valencia, CA are great.

I agree it's a great style, and I luckily never go too long without a Hefe, as I rarely seek out hop-bombs and flavor-blasting stouts. It's a great, comparatively simple style that can be packed with flavor and complex nuances if you look.

    Prost!

Banana, clove and bubblegum are not my idea of good beer. But to each his own.
