Good morning snifter smellers and cellar dwellers,

Mid-MI is coming off its first perfect spring Saturday of 2013, with a cloudy start to a forecasted wet and 57F forecasted Sunday. Nothing too dismal, it's not like Doom is impending.

Please forgive my lame and lackluster mention of my Founder's Black Party attendance last Saturday. I guess I just wasn't feeling it, some 10 hours later. No that I'm spry and restored, I must say I'm so very glad to have participated. So many world-class calibre BA ales, it's really tough to claim a standout fav. But I have to admit, the 2 yr aged KBS, "Devil's Cut" was simply outstanding. To say Founders are master barell angers in the craft beer world is an understatement, when it comes to high gravity stouts and such. Met some killer peeps and savored spectacular hand crafted deli sandwiches too.

I'm very, very, very, very, happy to report that HopCat (now famous craft beer bar and small, small brewery located in Grand Rapids) has broke ground for their second (and rumored, bigger) location in downtown East Lansing, smack dap in the thick of MSU. It's scheduled to open this August. Let us all pray this date is accurate, as they're usually not. Nonetheless, this will be a huge step forward for the somewhat squelched craft beer region that is the capital city area of Michigan. Just like George and Weezie, we be movin' on up! Thanks to craft beer soldier and visionary, Mark Sellers! More great news from Grand Rapids; Perrin Brewing beers have just hit the tap lines of some Mid-MI beer bars. I had the pleasure of trying for the first time, their grapefruit IPA at The Soup Spoon Cafe (very fresh and properly stored/served MI micros) in downtown Lansing. Just think of a beermosa made with fresh grapefruit juice instead of OJ. It was so delicious I had 2 pints.

Speaking of Grand Rapids, I'll be hunkered down in Cornerstone University's gym all afternoon for my daughter's volleyball tournament. Maybe there'll be a long enough break between matches for a growler fill run? So, while I'm enjoying the sounds of squeaking gym floors and screaming parents, I trust you fine folk will keep this thread abuzz with links to your thoughtful reviews and/or colorful commentary of the new beer/s you've DRANK TODAY. I do enjoy the pics of your new beers also. i just wish I could figure out how to post my beer pics from my iPad... Thanks for keeping NBS fun, fresh and informative. Good day and good drinkin'!

In the undying spirt of craft beer,

    malty

Beautiful spring day on LI - supposed to be in the upper 50's/low 60's, sunny and super-pleasant.
Founders is amazing. The only beer from them I've tried that didn't really "wow" me was Frangelic Mountain Brown, but I'm probably not a big brown ale guy and the hazelnut-iness (?) came off as saccharine-y (probably making up words, but you get the idea).
My only caveat(s) to Doom: the name "Doom" suggests something brutally dark or ominous, and this beer is more like Burton Baton - a crisp and deep DIPA with barrel-aged-ness. Label design was a little less than exciting (for a beer named, "Doom"), too, but what counts is what ends up in the glass, right?
Awesome. Hops of citrus, resin, and pine; suggestions of fruits like pineapple and grapefruit balanced by oak woods and chewy grains. Totally diggin' it.
Meanwhile, unable to get these guys out of my head: Volbeat - Danes blending rockabilly and death metal (lol) - this is them live in Wacken, 2012.

Singer says something about listening to Elvis and Johnny Cash in one ear and Mercyful Fate and Kreator in the other. Johnny Cash cover around 3:45-ish. Take it for what you will... I love 'em.

Watching The Hobbit (Peter Jackson version, 'natch) and eating some Chinese food after this post.

Have a great NBS - cheers!

    NEW BELGIAN PALE ALE SUNDAY

Another in a long line of perfect spring days here in Lancaster county. Its been consistently sunny and in the 60's of late. We are just back from a very pleasant but apparently exhausting picnic. I suddenly find myself the only one awake. I look around and see a house in a state of general disarray. Dishes need done, laundry to do, and a whole lot of all around tidying up to do. How can I possibly enjoy a new beer in such surroundings? I think my conundrum is clear. Do I take my new beer to the front porch or to the back porch?

There is a strong case to be made for the back porch. It's quieter and more private with lots of bird activity. But no, I'm going to head to the front porch for a quiet hour or so before I get to work. It has the very comfortable whicker chair placed just far enough from the railing to allow for maximum foot propping comfort. It's a busy world out my front door with friendly neighbors out for a walk and horse and buggies clip-clopping past. I'm thoroughly enjoying this new beer on a very fine Sunday.

I hope you all are enjoying your sunday as much as I'm enjoying mine. Cheers!

Espresso Imperial Russian Stout - Stone Brewing Co.
    4.5/5 rDev +2.5%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

    $6.99
    22 oz
Poured into a Stone tulip, served at around 45 degrees to start
Tasted on 4/28/2013 - I believe this brew was released on 4/15/2013

A: Black body with a slight reddish tint. Half a finger head.

S: Chocolate is dominating. I don't remember regular IRS having this much chocolate notes. Nice roasty malts, coffee notes. That's about it. I don't get any dark fruits or hops. No alcohol detected in the nose.

T: Wow. Delicious. Dark chocolate again is dominating the flavour, quickly followed by strong coffee notes and acidity. Not much hops detected (unlike regular IRS). Brown sugar, a bit of cola like flavour towards the end, and slight hops in the finish. Not much heat from the alcohol. Alcohol is very well hidden. If you don't enjoy coffee, I am not sure if you enjoy this, but man this is awesome. In my opinion, it's better than Speedway Stout.

M: It's just like regular IRS. Thick but not super chewy. Very little alcohol burn.

O: Stone does it again. Last beer from Stone that impressed me was Dayman Coffee IPA. While I like the regular IRS, I don't enjoy it fresh. This version fresh is way better than the regular IRS. 4.5 stars!

    New DIPA Sunday!

Greetings to the NBS group on a perfect Spring day here at the Jersey Shore. Warm sunshine in the mid-sixties today with a gentle breeze, and lots of good beer, too.

So I enjoyed this winner with lunch: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/19897/56467/?ba=NiceTaps.

I picked up some Evolution offerings (and other goodies) during a recent trip to DE and MD. I had their Lot 3 previously, quite good also.

Lunch is done, now it's time to grab another beer and get back outside.

    Cheers!

    New Saison Sunday

Greetings NBSers. I keep telling myself I'm going to make this a regular thing, and invariably life gets in the way. Last weekend it was an angry hangover that I only kind of deserved.

Anywho, a freaking gorgeous day in my corner of the northeast corner. Sitting right around 70 and incredibly sunny. Got out for a hilly bike ride this morning and now rehydrating with a pour of Mystic's Vespula Saison, a saison infused with saffron. And it is delicious. I just found out that these guys are a mere 4 miles from me and I've been twice in as many days.

Happy NBS and enjoy the imminent work week, all!

My apologies for my absence over the past few weeks but Managerial Accounting has been kicking my proverbial tookus.

Weather in Central OH is drizzly and nasty which helps the studies. I'm sure I've got some local biased but I don't know why this Yuengling Bock rates so poorly. It's not extreme or anything crazy but very approachable. And for the price point, I'll be bock for sure.

    Cheers and Happy NBS,

    Matt

    New Am. Pale Ale Sunday

    Hey Greetings NBSer's,

Spring finally arrived in SCMN. Better late than never, I suppose. I hold only a little bitterness about the delay. But is sure feels and looks nice, and it, of course, brings out all sorts of outdoor activities, which brings new energy and life to enjoy. Yea!
Spring also brings out an even stronger desire for hoppy beers. Today is a new local (MN) APA. Nicely balanced and easy to consume.

best to all this week and wherever you are I hope spring fills you will all it's glory.

Awesome weekend in West MI. Daytime temps in the 60's with partly cloudy skies. Weather made for an awesome 2-day, 22-mile hike through the trails of the "Northern Lower." A quicker pace today got me home in time to enjoy this offering from Rochester Mills.

Hi from sunny Chicago! It's been the perfect Spring weekend here. My youngest brother invited my whole family over for dinner tonight, which if course, means that I'm grilling. How can you have a bad day when grilling and having something good to drink. Happy Spring to everyone!

Strange to read all the posts and be unable to drink any beer today, new or old. Strange because I had at least 30 new beers yday (plus mannnnny more I've had before) at a wonderful NY beer festival called TAP NY. Nice selection displayed today, with some excellent pics and descriptions. Cheers!

Sunny here in dry land wheat country, with temps in the mid 60's but breezy. Winds are thankfully not strong enough to blow the top soil.

    Happy Trails!

Greetings fellow NBSers! A mostly cloudy day here in the Fourth Corner, with temps in the mid-50s. Yesterday was a local beerfest, a fund-raiser for the Max Higbee Center, which provides recreational opportunities to developmentally disabled teens and adults. They take 'em canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, to Mariners games etc. Great folks doing great work, and I'm glad to add my little bit by pouring beer at the fest. This is 12th annual, and I've been to them all. One local brewery, Chuckanut, held a prefunk for the brewers, and they had their newest batch of Marzen on tap, I had several. After the event, another brewery, Boundary Bay, held an after party, with plenty of hot food and cold beer. It was great fun to hang out with folks from so many breweries.

Today, BB had a "Hangover Brunch" in their beer garden and I was pressed into service helping out then too. Yay shift beers! The Mariners won their first series of the year, and there's acouple new brews on tap at one of my locals. This Rye Pale Ale is the newest in a series of brews made for Bellingham's soccer team. There are, IIRC, 8 brews by 8 different local/regional breweries, only available at games, or here at the Copper Hog: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/14503/92909. Nice take on the style. Cheers all!

    New Black Double IPA Sunday
    Greetings fellow NBSers,
Last week I was down in the Tri-Cities helping out around the house after my old man was sprung from the hospital after getting his knee replaced (nice to have a preview of what I'll be going through about 20 years from now, if I'm so very, very lucky:slight_frown:), so I missed NBS. I thought about posting a review of a Scottish ale from Ice Harbor that I had on my way out of town, but I was super-tired after battling ridiculously powerful side-winds and dodging medicine ball-sized tumbleweeds all the way to I-90. Better to wait unti this week and start off fresh.

Today I tried a "Black Double IPA" from Midnight Sun that I picked up in Idaho on Friday. Everything I've had from Midnight Sun has been quality and this was more of the same:
