I'm not a fan of Irish Reds, so as you said, to each his own.

Living in Madison has its perks. We have a sausage store called Bavaria Sausage and they do sell weisswurst and pretzels. All I have to do is open up the matching hefeweizen (I'm partial to Weihenstephaner) and I'm back in Munich's Viktualienmarkt. Delicious.

I, too, LOVE a traditional Hefe, but I cannot abide by your closing adjuration.

Hofbrau Muncher Weisse is a great one. I can drink it any time, anywhere...it's rated pretty highly but I still think underrated. Better than Paulaner, Ayinger, Franziskaner, Weihenstephaner in my opinion. (although those are really good too). Hoping I get a chance to try Sierra Nevada, Live Oak, and New Glarus' hefe at some point...

Surprisingly, here in central SC we have a German Meat Market that makes homemade Weisswurst (and Leberkaes!). They also sell Bavarian pretzels. That combination with Weissbier is truly magical -- more than the sum of its parts. If anyone can get their hands on some Weisswurst and pair them with a fresh Weissbier, it will likely elevate your appreciation of the style that much more.

Hacker-Pschorr Hefe surprised the hell out of me. All that classic hefe flavor with toffee notes to boot. Yum!

the hefeweizen and the witbier are two styles that are damn good no matter who you are. I have yet to meet somebody who doesn't like them. I have my moods for them, particularly when it's hot out. The following image just makes me wish I was in germany now :slight_frown:

Had a Live Oak hefe on tap at the Jester King brewery in Austin this past weekend- good stuff. Shiner's hefeweizen is still my favorite, simply because I can get it in Chicago.

I like experimenting with styles - and I agree with the OP. Hefeweizen must not be touched. Listen up, America.

Yep once my co-worker showed me how to properly eat a weisswurst- we grabbed some plus pretzels and mustard, took it to that biergarten (or at least that sitting area) in the Viktualienmarkt. This was during the 2 summer months I was doing an exchange in Munich and it was one of the 2 best months in my life. This is the main reason why I absolutely adore drinking a good hefeweizen in the summertime.

There is nothing, I repeat NOTHING, more impressive than Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen remaining in the top 50 beers on this site after all these years.

It's not extreme, aged in barrels, blended, strong, or even remotely hoppy. Just a basic, no frills brew, perfected over time.

I discovered Live Oak's Hefe on a recent trip to Texas. Man is it good. I only wish I could get my hands on some up here in Wisconsin.

My favorite from them is actually the Original. I wish there were 1000s of examples like Weihenstephan Original, rather than 1000s of IPAs.

Don't get me wrong, I love IPAs, but I'd be ok with less.

Well, I have a very good friend, and his wife, who just can't get past the banana and/or bubble gum characters in Bavarian Weizen -- so it's not that universal beer everyone would love to be able to embrace.
