I'm considered an intellectual in my community because I have read The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and other books turned video. Pretty high standards around here.

I'm also a prophet for knowing what is going to happen in Walking Dead.

    I wear many hats.

Most people here don't know what hipsters are. I don't know what hipsters are. I know all the jokes, and stereotypes, but have yet to meet an actual "hipster." Though I have a feeling that people here are just projecting, or are trying to insult others for no reason. If a group of people dress different, but like the same things as other groups of people, just at different times...they might be hipsters. I really can't tell you which group though...

My local watering hole will always have the O's game on. If there's no O's game, the bartender is a huge soccer fan, so there's always a soccer match on at least one TV. I approve

Pro-tip for anyone who thinks the TV's are distracting from conversation: That person isn't being distracted away from listening to you by the TV, they are using the TV as a way of escaping you.

    Be more interesting.

When I'm out to drink good stuff or stuff I haven't drank before, I try to go to bars that don't have televisions. If I want to drink good beer and watch TV, I can do that at home.

Anyone else notice that the bars that have the best beer usually have little to no televisions present?

good topic... I prefer tv to be on mute and not on the center of the stage of the bar ..somewhere on the side easily to glance at if possible.. people should not go out to experience a place that people have the same capability to do in their own home. People should go out to experience something they normally dont have.. "to escape"

First time I frequented a bar that had no TV was the old Thompson Street Brewery in NYC- and we loved it. People actually could talk (does McSorelys have a TV?). Then they put one in and people would stare it- I can't stand that. If there's something worth watching (like a Yankee game) then fine, but just staring at a TV drives me nuts.

The restaurant where I work has a few TVs and while they tend not to be an issue, they do cause some patrons to turn in to idiots.

We have 3 TVs and two of them are linked together. We have a "first come, first serve" policy when it comes to choosing the programming due to the lack of TVs, unless a local sports team/a major sporting event is on. There really isn't anything else like watching a grown man throw a fit because we can't put his team's game on because a different person/group of people were there first.

The only other problem is the constant screaming/yelling at the TV. The restaurant where I work has a large bar that is in the middle of the establishment with no major partitions separating it. During local sporting events I try to keep the volume of the TV low because the people at the bar will just be screaming over it, thus filling the whole place with irritating noise. If the TV volume goes up, people will scream louder until we have to ask them to tone it down. I guess no one told them that even if you scream louder at the TV, the players and officials still won't be able to hear you.

For those who say no TVs:

So any night there is a game you may want to watch on, you either have to go to a sports bar or stay home? You cannot go out to your favorite Craft beer bar to watch Monday Night football. If you dont want to watch, do not watch.

I much prefer being able to catch part of a game at my favorite bar, just like I would if home. i guess it depends on if you like sports or not...

I asked this question the other night... "What is with hipsters and the fact that they don't like watching sports?"

I hate going to that bar where the music is too loud, the tap list is crappy and there are naked ladies dancing everywhere.

Well, the naked ladies are ok I guess.

I don't mind TVs in bars as long as they're passable.

Seems that the argument for/against TVs basically comes down to this. Those not interested in sports say no TVs while the sports fans want them.

The only thing I find funny is the non-TV crowd thinking that sports being on somehow doesn't foster conversation. Quite the contrary, it actually ENCOURAGES discussion...between fellow sports fans of course. My local craft bar was running the NFL draft Thursday/Friday with the volume off, but there was plenty of bantering on going after each pick was made, many of the times with people who had been strangers up until that very moment. Conversating at the bar doesn't have to strictly be about beer 100% of the time.

Gotta have them for sure. Sometimes you get people at the bar that don't want to converse and having sports on is a great conversation starter. Having a tv isn't going to stop people from socializing. Tags ca be done right and wrong but they definitely are a plus to have.

I would rather have a few tv's than a bunch of stiff fuckers sitting there stroking their beards, contemplating life, pretending they know better than me.

Hipsters like watching soccer, that's about it. Sports such as football, basketball, or hockey are just too "popular" for them to get into, I guess.

Thankfully, with craft beer's popularity growing, i can find more places to combine my likes of sports and craft beer. No longer do I need to tolerate some hipster "beer palace" to enjoy craft beer - and I can even catch whatever sporting event I'm interested in.
