I'm pretty sure I'm a relatively big hophead as no other beer other than IPAs and DIPAs have been able to satisfy me in the past 6 months.

But unfortunately, there's been a mysterious phenomenon happening lately where I just can't seem to smell or taste the citrus/fruity aspect of the IPAs I've been drinking. I feel like I'm just tasting malt, grass, pines, and bitterness. I want my citrus and tropical fruits, damnit!

Anyone else experience this? I wonder if I've become numb to the more subtle characteristics of IPAs, aka the tolerance effect. If not, it could be the beers I'm drinking (though I doubt it). As a rule, I drink beers within one month of the bottling date, generally around 45-50 degrees.

These are the beers I've drank in the past month and with which I have been experiencing the hop numbness (out of 12oz bottles). And it makes NO SENSE that I should be missing out on citrusy, floral, tropical hop aromas and flavors!

    Firestone Union Jack
    Troegs Perpetual IPA
    Green Flash West Coast IPA
    SN Hoptimum DIPA
    Dogfish 90 Minute
    Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA

Anyone else experience this? I'm looking for answers...Please help!

Yep, this post pops up every few months. Just take a break from hoppy beers for awhile, it will return. You aren't dying (although it might feel like it).

I'm experiencing this a bit myself. Funny to hear someone else with this problem. Oh well, it's a good time of year to drink a little lager...

That lineup (which I envy  is a recipe for palate suicide. Wean yourself off with a few 6 packs of SNPA for a week or two, then maybe give Torpedo a whirl to ease your way back in...

I feel as though this can happen to almost any style of beer. Once you consume a lot of a particular style you become too accustomed to it and you can no longer experience the sense of joy or sense of intensity you once did. I've had similar issues with stouts this winter. Its like anything in life. If it gets boring give it a break and come back to it when you feel the enthusiasm to do so.

Yeap, happened to me a couple months ago but, like everyone has said I laid off really hoppy brews for awhile, something like a couple weeks to a month, and then I could taste all that hop goodness again

And this is why my fridge is only ~30% IPAs/IIPAs. With so much other great stuff out there, why confine yourself or even focus on one style when it's just going to burn you out?

Been happening to me ever since my most recent trip to Vermont a couple of weeks ago. The combined hoppy efforts of Hill Farmstead, Lawson's, and the Alchemist can do it to anybody pretty easily though

Couldn't have said it better myself. My recent weekend trip to the Burlington area has left my tastebuds decimated.

Yes this happened to me recently as well. Right around the time that Palate Wrecker, Hopslam, and Sucks came out.

Cut IPAs out for 3-4 weeks. The revisit your past favorite IPA/DIPA. You will not be disappointed. Will power to do so?...good luck.

Maybe take a beer break for a month or so and then try going back to hoppyness?

Do you have allergies? it's that time of the year. I've improved my sense of smell and dealt with allergies, really helps to improve things. One great purchase I made was a humidifier. Run it constantly and my olfactory is much improved.

I've had the opposite effect. All I tasted were bitter/piney/grassy hops. Then I had a sucks, jai alai, and lunch. Now when I drink ruination, exit 16, alchemy hour, they are way more citrusy tasting.

I cut ipa's out for a week or so to 'reset' my palate. I think thats the direction most of us on here go when taste starts to become tasteless. Hope it comes back for you...

I think you just need some time away from IPAs. West coast brews tend to be more citrusy but you should still taste that in most IPAs.

Lagunitas has a good dose of the citrusy and tropical fruit hops. Try Lagunitas IPA and Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale.
