Apologize if this has been discussed before.

Boulevard Saison-Brett is one of my all-time favorite saisons. I've never aged it before so I saved a couple 2012 bottles this last year. Was wondering what your experiences have been like with aging this beer? I imagine that hops fade and it gets some good brett funk.

Precisely as you guessed. It becomes much funkier and the brett comes more pronounced. It's a thing of beauty.

Cool, anybody done longer than 1 or 2 years?

I drank a bottle of '08 the other night and I'm sad to say it wasn't that great. The funk had really taken over and that beautiful Amarillo hop character had greatly diminished. I like Saison-Brett when it's really fresh, about 6 months in, and then at about 12 months. I wouldn't go longer than 18 months personally. I had a discussion with Jean-Marie Rock when we collaborated with him a few years ago and asked him about his preferences with aging Orval. He responded, "I like my beer like I like my women. Young."

Funny you should ask...I have an 09, 10?, 11 and 12 at the house  I love them with age.

My experience with the '08 (in Dec.) was the opposite. I adored the funk. It was an awesome experience, and I recommend it. It should be noted however that the base beer in '08 was Saison, now it is Tank 7. They are very different beers.

The base beer for the Saison-Brett in '08 was also Tank 7. All public releases of Saison-Brett have been with Tank 7 as the base.

Definitely a fan of this beer. For my personal taste I like it with some age but no more than 2 years. I had several '09s in 2012 and I thought they were on the downside.

One year is a good mark for this beer. Have had a longer-aged bottle, but strangely it had little/no brett character. Probably a bad bottle.

We had a 2009 and 2012 at a tasting a few months back, and while 2012 was drinking very nicely, the 2009 had lost almost all of it's character and it was unanimously agreed that the 2009 was a ghost of a once great beer.

Still, it was interesting to try, but I would not recommend aging for more than a couple years.

Just to reiterate you and most of the above. We did a little vert of '09, '11, and '12 about a week ago and the '11 was the unanimous winner. I was actually pretty surprised and disappointed how much the '09 fell off. I figured the Brett would have done more for it. Either way, I'm glad I was able to try and share them.

It's true, I have a couple '09's still and they are extremely over the hill. I actually prefer this beer fresh I have decided, when it still has a strong dry-hopping presence.

12-18 months is the sweet spot for me. love it fresh, but weirdly enough find it kind of heavy? whereas a bit of time makes it funkier but also much lighter tasting IMO. around 18 months it is in its funky prime. i just cracked open a bottle last week that i want to say was around 15 months and it was incredible, but i wanted a bit more funk still.

I agree that the body does thin out and become less heavy. I feel like my '12's are in a weird spot right now personally...hops have faded but not a "ton" of brett yet...very peppery. Thoughts?

Would that have been an '11 or '12 you were drinking poopinmybutt? Came out around June last year right?
