I recently planted 3 hop rhizomes out in Richmond .. They are Centennial, Cascade and Willamette. I have read that the yield is small to none in the first year but what I do harvest I would be willing to share with locals if I get a decent amount. I will keep updating this post with pictures and results as they grow...just in case there are some other people in and around Houston that wanted to try this out.

I don't brew, but I am a big fan of embracing local product when possible, and hope local brewers feel the same. It would be nice for texas brewers to not have to look out-of-state as much when searching for their hop supply.

    In short, well done sir.

Let us know how your first harvest turns out

I would love to snag some Centennial for my next homebrew

I planted two each of Centennial and Cascade that I harvested for the first time last fall. You are correct in that you won't get much or anything at all year one. I was able to yield about 5 oz off of the 4 plants, which became my aroma hops for a small APA. Not very practical, but a fun experiment. Good luck to you!

KINDA unrelated to the thread, but I have a 2-tap Edgestar KC2000 kegerator that I'm unloading. Also have a lot of homebrew equipment for sale. I have a list of things. BM me if you're interested.

I'm trying to grow cascade and colombus in DFW. These guys popped up about 1.5 weeks ago. Starting off potted, and probably transplanting to a suitable location next year. I definitely need to get to work on a trellis... columbus on left, cascade on right.

Looking good so far man .. I am interested to see what this Texas climate does for the hops .. I have them in morning sun afternoon shade.. Im worried the july and august direct afternoon sun would roast them. Keep us updated !

Thanks! I'm really nervous about july and august as well. These little guys get full on sun from about 8am to 4pm... basically prime conditions to be burnt to a crisp.

i might move them to a location with morning sun and afternoon shade prior to building the trellis.. I don't wanna deal with moving them when they are 7ft. tall .

I have one plant that looks exactly like yours( cascade ), but its in the ground. The willamette only has a sprout and so does the other plant. I have them in three different parts of the yard that get sunlight at different times. So far so good but one is really cruising.

By July you will probably be watering them daily or almost daily. Your first year plants may not have enough root structure built to absorb that much water so check the ground before watering. Definitely add some mulch to help protect the roots from getting overheated. As long as we do not have another 2011 summer they should survive as long as they have enough water. If you can position them to avoid late afternoon shade it will help keep them from drying out.

Thats awesome. This is something else that me and the mrs thought of for a buisness if we could get a lot of land and some cash together. Grow hops for local consumption, or for supplying your own brewpub. Of course it would take time, effort and money lol.

    Awesome to you for sure!

This is def something i'd like to try out. I see several books out there on it. Anybody know the better ones or better websites on this?
