I went to the Bruery yesterday go get a bottle of 2011 Melange #3 and upon bringing it home I compared it to my other bottles and noticed that there are differences between other bottles and it has me confused, particularly the ABV.

Bottle 1: Picked up from Bruery yesterday, Vintage 2011, 15.0% ABV
Bottle 2: Received with my 2013 Reserve Society Membership, Vintage 2012 (I assume), 15.0% ABV
Bottle 3: Received in a trade about 1.5 years ago, Vintage ?, 15.5% ABV

To my knowledge Melange #3 has only 2 vintages (2011 and 2012) but I don't know if there are multiple batches for each vintage or if barrel-treatment boosted the alcohol on some batches, or if the 2013 RS membership bottle is Vintage 2011. Hoping people out there in BA Land can help me out, I would attach pics but I forgot to take them last night.

    Was this ever resolved?

there was a 2010 batch of Melange 3, it was released in spring 2010, three bottle limit to reserve society members (back when there were only 400 members in the RS). That is most likely the one you got in trade (Id have to go to my cellar to look at my bottle to confirm the 15.5% abv, but that sounds right).

I noticed the wax on the ones that came with the initiation packages this year is darker then the last release? i has such a confuse. never looked at abv's.

best bet is to open them all at the same time. drink an ounce or two of each then dump the rest. save them gainz.

No resolution, just doing to take Bdub's suggestion...2 oz of each and then drain pour.

The abv on the label arcs in different directions, not sure which is which...

First batch of melange 3 had slanted wax if I remember correctly.

Not trying to resurrect an old thread, just thought I could try and help.

This is how to tell the Melange No. 3's apart. 2011 ABV is convex, and 2012 ABV is concave and both are 15%.
I don't have one, but as said above, the 2010 is more than likely 15.5% ABV. Will be interesting to see what the difference is with the 2013 bottle.

The blue part of the label on the 2010 is a much brighter blue that the future ones.

Thanks for the help! Randomly read this thread and realized I needed to verify date on my supposed 2011 bottle. Can't wait to get home and check it out.

'13 says "2013 Edition" in the upper right corner of the label.

Here is a pic I just took of my lone 2010 bottle:

I think the humor of "first world problems" are at this point played out. We all get the idea that life is pretty decent here in the United States.

Sure, sure. I'm just struck by the totally straight-faced discussion about shades of wax, 0.5% disparities in ABV, slanted wax, concave vs. convex text, shade of blue on the label... I guess I've just been seriously out-beer-geeked. Good luck to you all.

Ah it doesn't hurt much to know whats what if your collecting verticals, or aging them specifically.
