Are they starting to get to "Alpine" status as far as IPAs go? I've never been, but seems they are getting a lot of buzz for their hoppy beers. I am going this Friday, and am looking to get a growler of Melrose.

As an out of towner who is less likely to be biased, they still have some catching up to do when it comes to reaching Alpine status.

The ones I had were very good and worth the trip for. I did a flight of all the IPAs they had on. I think 1 DIPA, 1 black IPA, and two normal IPAs. They are the most San Diegoesque of all the IPAs I've had from around LA (that's a good thing).

I don't know if I would go as far as "Alpine status", but Beachwood makes the best beer in Los Angeles.

    Personal pet peeve: Comparison threads.

Though, I am happy you didn't ask whether _____ IPA from Beachwood stands up to ______ IPA from Alpine or RR.

Beachwood makes great IPAs (along with the rest of their beers). They don't make the same recipes that Alpine does, so their beers are different. They also haven't been around for as long so they might not have the same brand recognition around the country amongst us beer geeks that Alpine or RR does. I'd also go out on a limb and say that they don't keep as many IPAs on tap year-round as Alpine, but I don't frequent alpine nearly enough to say that for sure. In any case, Beachwood makes killer beer, and I gladly patronize their LB brewpub as often as I can make it over there!

The Dark Lord is wise, although judging by his avatar, appears to have had a few (dozen) too many

I think Thrillseeker can stand up to an Alpine IPA.

Thrillseeker is good. It's not Duet or Nelson good, at least based on the Thrillseeker I had on tap in February.

Citra-holic gives any citra beer a run for it's money. Far away my favorite hoppy offering.

Beachwood's food shits on everyone else, it's that damn good.

Get the chicken nachos and loaded fries to start...

I just had it fresh from the last bottle release, so I can't really comment on past batches. The other IPAs I've had of theirs (Melrose and Laurel) have been good, but not quite Alpine good.

I'm there now. Drinking Melrose versus Pliny. Melrose is good (actually great) and I can't honestly say I prefer one over the other. They're good in different ways. Alpine too, all are treasures.

BTW, they just tapped Supplication, Dusk til Dawn, and many more special beers. God... I love Beachwood.

I think that Beachwood is mostly legendary for putting on some of the best guest taps around. In terms of the beers they brew, I think Thrillseeker is one of the best smelling beers around, but the bitterness is a little overwhelming. None of there IPA's top Duet or Nelson IMO.

I cannot stand the constant who is better than........fill in the blanks..... But what I will say is IMHO nobody, and I mean NOBODY is delivering the diversity, quality and exceptional quality that BW is. Their line up is flat out insane. They crush anyone as far as diversity of style goes. I lost track of how many world class IPA/DIPA are in their lineup. When they bottle, they do it right. The fact that they are 10 minutes form my home makes it even sweeter.

    Cheers,

Beachwood LB is my favorite spot in LA County. Get some chicken nachos and blue cheese grits. Oh, their beers are good too I guess.

Isnt that funny, we forgot that they serve some of the best " carolina " style bbq anywhere. Go for the beer, have some fried green tomatoes, some pulled pork and then tell me why this place is leap-frogging everyone.

    Cheers....
