With the days getting hotter I find myself craving more hoppy refreshment. Just had Driftwood's old Cellar Dweller, which totally surpassed my expectations. It had all the toffee sweetness I love in an English barley wine with a wonderful counterbalance of citrusy hops.
What are your favorite American barley wines and why?

You mean besides Bigfoot? Often imitated, never duplicated.

Flying Mouflan is an excellent American Barleywine. BA Bigfoot is pretty spectacular as well.

Oooooh that's a tough one. I guess my top 2 (currently) would be Sierra Nevada Bigfoot and Three Floyds Behemoth. Both have huge citrus and pine notes while still having some nice complexity and sweetness. Bigfoot does age incredibly well though and I have not tried a Behemoth aged (currently aging a 2013 though).

Great Divide Old Ruffian because it has a great hop presence and almost borderlines what you'd expect from a DIPA, but it's clearly a barleywine. I'm speaking when it's relatively fresh, I've never had it aged. Flying Mouflan and Behemoth are right there for the same reasons.

Bigfoot has to be my favorite by far. I was hoping ST's Backburner was going to be great, however I found it to be a bit too sweet.

I love Flying Mouflan a whole lot. It has nothing to do with affordability, either. Although...it definitely helps.

Ditto on the Flying Mouflan. I'm usually partial to English-style barley wines, but I think FM is very well balanced and flavorful.

Avery Hog Heaven,Three Floyds Behemoth, Great Divide Old Ruffian, and also Upland Winter Warmer. Had received both the behemoth and upland in a recent trade and was thoroughly impressed.

What about Ale Smith's Old Numbskull? Ale Smith recently became available in Washington but I've only had Speedway.
