So i'm fairly new to this site, but have been lurking for a minute. How common is it for the mailman to actually steal your beer? I sent a friend in Michigan, via USPS, a package 2 weeks ago containing a 2 six packs, a bomber, one canned IPA and one bottle of Orval Trappist. All very well wrapped in bubble wrap with packing peanuts, so you could shake the box and not be able to tell their was beer in it, it even said Hammer Nutrition all over the box.

Well im hanging out with the recipient of the package right now, and he recieved everything excep the canned Caldera IPA and Orval. I am 100% positive I sent it, and he's a close friend of mine so he wouldn't lie about it. The mailman stole my beer, and i'm pissed because I'm pretty sure there's nothing I can do about it. This is the first time i've sent beer through the mail and I though I did everything right, but damn this sucks.

Did the box look like it leaked or have any signs of being opened? When this happens more often than not something broke and they just pulled it out and still delivered the rest. Or, if you used a ton of peanuts...it could still be in the box and he didnt see them. Happened before. I'd be cautious before going all ballistic on your local letter carrier. USPS is generally a bad choice for domestic shipping, FYI. It is technically not legal vs. against terms of service with UPS/FedEx. Although I've heard USPS is still generally better about delivering leaky boxes.

Also, honestly, do you really think someone with a Federal job is going to risk it for 2 beers? I imagine the penalty for stealing mail is at the very least, termination.

As in all things, when someone goes out of their way to specify they are 100% sure of something, it tells me they aren't.

Yea that's the thing, normally I would hesitate blaming the postman, but I'm standing here looking at the box right now, and my friend sent me a picture when he opened everything, it was lacking those 2 beers. He claims nothing was spilled or dented, he's a very close friend of over 20 years, my good drinking buddy, so I know it's the truth, he's been looking for Orval for awhile, so he wouldn't drink it and lie about not getting it... The rest in case you were wondering was a 6-pack Sweetwater Happy Ending, 6 pack Sweetwater 420 (with two taken out and replaced with an Oaked Arrogant Bastard and Hop Wallop replacing them), and a Yazoo Sue bomber. I have a hard time believing they would take just 2 beers, but what else could have happened?

Can I do anything or should I not even bother since it's only 2 beers? I'm just worried this will happen in the future as this is my first time shipping beer through the mail. NOT using USPS again.

Thank your lucky stars that you received anything after shipping through USPS.

Consider that a both a first-timer tax and a lesson.

Has anyone had beer randomly go missing whilst shipping? I'm just baffled that it's not there. Unless a band of raccoons with a nose for good beer decided to steal from my buddies porch, it had to be USPS. But if I was a raccoon, I would have took the 6-pack of Happy Ending.

edit: i guess USPS was a bad choice

So do you imagine the mailman sitting in his truck, cutting the box open, taking 2 beers, then taping it back up and delivering it? Why would he do that and not just take the whole box, which would then just go as "missing"? Seems like something pretty dangerous for a guy to do, risking his job, to selectively pick and choose a few beers from a box.

But what do I know. Stranger things have happened.

I'm 100% sure that someone other than my intended recipient stole it.

It happens all the time, but it's not random by any means. Typically, there's some sort of "red flag" that might tip off the shipping service that something is in the box that shouldn't be.

Again, you're lucky that anything made it to its destination. Boxes sometimes even......DISAPPEAR ENTIRELY.

And honestly, I feel like anyone at the USPS office could have easily gotten away with it.

You actually think the mail carrier surreptitiously inspected the contents of your box, found a few relatively common, completely random and unexceptional beers, stole them for his own pleasure, and taped back up the box after wiping away all forensic evidence? If this is your 100% theory, I am 50% certain that you simply thought you packed the beer but didn't. It's like you picked the least likely explanation and concluded, "I'll go with that!"

This is like when someone hears a thump down the hall, can't figure out what made the noise, and immediately figure that their house must be inhabited by ghosts.

It is absolutely not a question that I packed the beer, I remember how and where in the box I placed them, and trust me i'm having a hard time believing someone would take widely available beers as well especially with the risk involved in losing their job.

or it broke and they re-packed and shipped the rest... or you forgot to pack them like you thought (we've all forgotten a bottle before), or your friends wife/roommate/pet flying squirrel drank them, etc. etc.

the odds of two (mediocre as far as value/difficult to get) beers being stolen by a USPS guy and the rest being delivered is pretty low i'd guess. not impossible (i'm not 100% sure it didn't happen), but pretty unlikely. especially if it wasn't in a bottle shipper that is broadcasting that it likely contains alcohol.

On second thought you should go to your local police station and file a report. This. Definitely this.
