This is why I always have fed ex hold the box at a facility down the street. I live in a safe enough neighborhood, but it only takes a stranger driving by and that pretty fedex box is gone.

    This.

There was a few thefts in my neighborhood so I started having them hold it. Let my guard down and they delivered to my house when I was there until I had a misdelivery. Now I just have them hold it again. It saves me a headache and I don't have to be home on delivery day.

Just dropped a box off last week at a Fedex drop site and between the time I handed it to the clerk and it was supposedly picked up by the driver, it went missing. Never even got scanned. Unfortunately, I can't replace the contents, but my trading partner has been extremely cool about the whole situation. Just waiting to figure out how I can make it up to him.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS GET A RECEIPT WHEN YOU DROP THE BOX OFF!

And they should ask you. Mine ALWAYS says "do you want a receipt for that" to which they receive an emphatic YES. Otherwise, its like your package doesnt exist if it goes missing.

curious. do all the above victims feel the 'crimes' were completely random or perhaps the clerk that accepted is familiar with routines/aware of what probably was in the box & took advantage of the fact that it's unlikely a shit storm would ensue over the missing parcel? likewise with the boxes snagged off porches - wonder if any of the victims suspect another beer nerd in the know might be responsible? :grimacing:

Always have my boxes sent to my office. I know that's not an option for some, but if it is please do it. Prevents boxes from being stolen and saves a good chunk on the shipping costs.

I receive a lot of shipments from beer trading and even more for my other hobby cigars. I never wanted to deal with stolen boxes so I pay the $125 a year and have a box at my local UPS Store where they receive everything and sign where necessary.

No fool proof system but if I am going to order a $700 box from Belgium it gives me a bit more comfort.

The girl that works the counter at the FedEx office I always drop my boxes off always smiles at me and asks "more books"? She never actually asks what is in it anymore. So I feel somewhat safe... at least until a box disappears.

ironically, this box was intended for me (ironic because i had a box stolen and posted in this thread a while ago). the good news is that it seems that the box must've been lost in the facility because it suddenly appeared on tracking yesterday and then showed up today! everything was perfect!!!

Evidently, they gave the package to the UPS driver and it hung around the facility for a week - glad it all worked out

Very sorry to hear this happened to you OP. After nearly six years of trading I had a box go missing two weeks ago after tracking shows it landed safely. On the one hand, maybe I should feel fortunate that I've had so many wonderful trades and never encountered this before. On the other hand, I can't replicate the box and its hard not to feel a bit burned.

If you're using FedEx you can request packages be held at FedEx Office location for free. (if there's one around you). Might be something to consider when receiving walez.

Just had a box stolen from my porch for the first time (yes I know this thread is about 5-6 weeks old/dead). Feeling pretty burned. Damn thieves. What is anyone's experience with UPS and getting a refund for the value of the items?

Tracking shows the box was delivered.

You sure it was stolen? Probably more than half the time this happens, they just delivered it to the wrong house. I'd start by walking the neighborhood and looking around, then I'd call UPS

I'm crossing my fingers that this happened but why would someone hang on to a box from Thursday afternoon until now. It's a super dense neighborhood in San Francisco with apartments all over the block. Knocking on lots of doors seems silly and fruitless. Going to try to talk to the UPS driver today and see if he remembers anything.

Will they pay the insurance $ amount to the shipper? Or was it too late in the process? Does anyone know...

Sorry, you didnt mention how long it had been, so I thought we were talking about a delivery today. So yes, sounds like the box is gone - there has been a rash of this in my neighborhood as well, and I lost 1 box myself.

You'll have to file a claim with UPS. Its not too late, but you'll need to decide what to tell them was in the box. Since its missing, I guess it really doesnt matter, so just make the $ amount match up to what will be needed to replace the contents. Good luck!

How is it the problem of UPS or FedEx if your box was stolen after they delivered it? Everyone seems to worried about beer karma on this site, what about cosmic karma? Why are you trying to make up a story (lie) in order to get the deep pocket carrier pay for it?

It's also possible the box was "lost" by being mis-delivered, and not stolen at all, so I'd file a claim (though I guess keeping a box that isn't yours is stealing too, just not right off the porch)
