Nowadays it makes a fine complement to fried rice. The reviews are a blast. But does anyone recall how it tasted fresh?

I was 12 when it was fresh so I can't help.

I don't remember any soy sauce, just a very concentrated malt flavor and maybe a touch too hot.

Agreed. I remember a friend and I stupidly thinking "double bock is awesome, how great will triple bock be?".
Not what we were expecting. Pete's Wicked, Red Dog and anything from Sam Adams was top shelf to us at that point.

I had one in '99 or '00 (so it def wasn't fresh), and it was horrible. It was a struggle to drink between two people. I never drain poured things back then, but if I did, it most surely would have been one. I remember this guy that I went to college with swore that mixing it with SA Double Bock in a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio was really amazing. I never tried it because I didn't want to waste anymore money on a Triple Bock.

yeah, i remember it well. my boss at the time bought three bottles for me (and the only time he ever did anything generous, for anyone i think).

what can be said that hasn't already been said? at the time there wasn't a whole lot of cellaring being done, except maybe Hardy's or Duvel. i distinctly remember that no amount of time, no amount of palate, nothing was ever going to make this something to be proud of. what a fucking disaster.

four moves, two jobs and one kid later and we still have two bottles. but i can't i imagine ever giving them up. also, i have zero curiosity. likely still sucks. thanks for bringing it up.
    Cheers.

    edit:
i rarely read reviews and i usually agree with the Bros., but this one is... generous? revisionist?

One of the vintages is actually good and drinkable. I forget which. I used the only bottle I ever bought for stir fry to replace the soy sauce. Lasted me a couple months.

I had two bottles fresh, back before I even knew cellaring was a thing, not sure which vintage. I recall being extremely intrigued by it, and actually sort of enjoying it, if only for its uniqueness. It was pretty hot, and it was the thickest beer I have ever seen. It wasn't altogether unlike NyQuil, in retrospect. I'd love to try another, just for the experience, and for the cool bottle.

I had two or three bottles when it first came out. I thought it was alright, but I never had the soy sauce version. The killer for me was drinking an entire bottle one night. I enjoyed it much more in small doses.

I was like 7 when this first came out. I wouldn't mind trying this at some point, regardless of how hot or soy saucy it tastes. Too bad this won't be found in stores anymore. At least in Rhode Island/Southern Mass...

I had it fresh and wasn't impressed. It wasn't any better with several years of age.

I was given six 1997 triple bock and six 1997 samiclaus dark that year. I remember it being like a gag gift literally. "Happy birthday dude drink up" Like someone above said I held Pete's Wicked Summer Ale in very high regard in those days. I don't have any tasting notes but I'll never forget the look and smell of that shit. It poured like black maple syrup and if I remember tasted like sticky bitter leather. The sami had a greenish look and everyone said it tasted like Jager. I still have a bottle of each and I'm never going to open them. I only begun cellaring in the past few years so if those guys stayed around this long there is a reason.

It was innovative at the time. It gave rise to a lot of barrel aged beers we consider commonplace today. I still taste a lot of Triple Bock in Utopias. It wasn't very good, but I appreciated the craftsmanship. It mostly tasted like maple cough medicine but pushed the boundaries of beer at the time so I appreciated it.

I had it in either '95 or '96 (don't know which vintage). I remember I didn't like it, but can't recall for what reason. It wasn't awful, I think, but I didn't like it. And back then I remember enjoying McEwan's Scotch Ale, Mackeson Triple XXX Stout and Sam Adams Scotch Ale (just for comparison).

P.S. Can't remember whether at the time I liked Sam Adams Double Bock (well before it became part of Imperial Series).

I didn't think there ever was such a beast as "Fresh Triple Bock".

I had many bottles fresh back in '94 when it first came out, the taste was very similar to Tactical Nuclear Penguin except with more maple in it. Almost like beer flavored brandy. Still have a '94 in the cellar, waiting for the right occasion to crack it open. Even has the hang tag on it describing how it was intended to be aged. Maybe I should keep it for a 20th anniversary of triple bock party

I was at a tasting back in 2007 and the Boston Beer rep happened to be in town and brought a fresh bottle of their 2007 version (which was never released) and it had an extremely similar taste to Nestle Quick, very heavy cocoa mix flavor. I dont know what they were planning on doing with it but never saw it released.
