This. Incredibly solid and well made, albeit basic DIPA that is a still getting talked about to this day. These beers are not supposed to be similar. You might as well toss 90 minute into the ring and say how it's so much maltier and boring than heady.

Pliny is the gold standard when it comes to IPAS.
Heady is an epic beer but don't discount the greatness that is Pliny.

Pliny is a very good DIPA, Heady is something special. I've never had a beer even remotely close to Heady, but I've had plenty similar to Pliny (and much easier to come by). I'd like to be able to buy Pliny easily, but I'll "settle" for Double Jack and Flower Power which are just as good, if not better IMO

    Abrasive destroys them both.

Both are great beers, don't get wrong; but Abrasive is on a different level. I hate North Dakota, but love the fact I can pick it up rather easily than those not living in the frozen tundra.

I agree with what someone said earlier - I live in VT and still feel privileged when I get to drink Heady. That being said, I wish New England had some of the wider distribution access that CA seems to be able to get. Have yet to try Pliny at all - god damn I love IPAs. Rambling post over

Why isn't there an emoticon for me giving you the finger?

Heady isn't the end-all-be-all of beers, but neither is Pliny. There is no end-all-be-all of beers. There are a bunch of A+ IPAs out there. You like Heady better than Pliny. You drink Heady more. You're comfortable with it and enjoy it more. Oh, and if you build something like Pliny up, you're most likely going to be disappointed. It's another great DIPA, it's not like it's your first BA Imperial Stout. Jesus.

I have to agree with the OP, as a regular consumer of both I find that Heady cans fit better in the cup holder than the 500ml Pliny bottles when driving in my Ferrari with my supermodel girlfriend to the airport to take my private jet to the Bahamas, therefore making it superior.

I've been very lucky to have had both.

They don't seem similar to me. Heady is in-your-face bold, and Pliny more balanced.

Enjoy both, for their unique qualities.

You all crack me up. I live in Vt. and can drink Heady any day of the week. It's ok, but not my cup of tea. Not an IPA fan here. NOW...give me anything of quality that is a barley/malt forward, BBA'd, barleywine, stout...you get it. Now we're talking!

You get to enjoy Heady because of Pliny. THREAD NUMBER 605, COME AND GONE.

No but seriously this is a beer website, did you really think you were the first (or 35th?) person to come up with this thread idea?

Here we go again, someone doesn't love PTE and the naysayers come out of the woodwork. Yet somehow it remains the 3rd ranked beer. Must be a lot of mistaken people out there for PTE to be # 3.

Couldn't agree more. These two beers are the evidence the beer styles have EVOLVED. Without the groundbreaking deliciousness of Pliny, Heady Topper wouldn't exist. Comparing the two is silly, IMO. If anything, Heady is a tribute to beers like Pliny that paved the way years ago. As BA's, I think we all need to appreciate the history of styles as much we froth over THE NEXT BIG THING.

    Cheers!
