I believe the term he used was "epic". Epic letdown. I mean, the beer is delicious and everything, a finely crafted ale and all that, but yeah... just kind of an epic letdown.

Pliny is he best IPA I've had, and I've tasted a pretty fair amount. IF there was a picture next to the definition of IPA, you'd see PtE. I haven't tried Heady yet but hope too soon. Nelson is another KILLER IPA from Cali.

I just tried pliny for the first time yesterday (5 days old)

I was let down ONLY due to the fact that... well I was about to try the "best IPA in the world", so i was inevitably expecting a hop bomb. Pliny is not a hop bomb, however it serves its purpose. It is an extremely balanced and drinkable DIPA. It's hard to find any foul tastes or lingering after-taste either. In this current age we are accessible to a wide variety of DIPAs and IIPAs; so when a solid, balanced DIPA doesn't explode hops in our mouth we get let down a little bit. I wish I had more of it to try so i could really get a feel for it. Trying Blind Pig later today.

I still haven't tried Pliny or Heady Topper, but I did get a chance to try Enjoy By last year. When my brother got to do the same a few weeks later, he texted to let me know that it blew Pliny out of the water. I'm more curious than ever to try PtE for myself to see if I agree with him. But alas, I won't be on the west coast again for quite some time.

"Drinkibility". LOL! What is this a fucking miller lite commercial? Sack up boys, heady is the winner by at least 2 lengths.

Threads like this are starting to convince me that people who are "let down" by Pliny are either trying to prove how cool they are by going against the hype, or just have no idea what great beer tastes like...

I can't say I've ever been let down by a top beer. If anyone is..maybe it's time for you to move on to something else. The only time I can remember being let down by a high ranked beer, was upon drinking the DIPA which I loved, I realized it was almost 4 months old. And I actually felt let down by not noticing before purchasing, and the flavor decline. But that was admittedly my fault.

Wow.. A bit biased aren't we? You create a post arguing a beer you happen to have named your own personal user name after lol. Don't think the, 'regular' heady tag was needed given your member name lol. I've had both multiple times and I prefer Pliny any day. Both are fabulous, but its really no argument IMO. Pliny would have been better 10 years ago if given the matchup and its better right here today. The sad thing is about this argument is that you are basically blasting a double ipa who has been around for a long long time now and with Russian River brewing Younger they don't even consider it their 'best' dipa these days. Sure it's there most produced of the 2, but from what I hear younger is the next gen Pliny. But please stop going on about some rant of why Heady is the best beer in the world. Can one really make that claim? With so many great beers being crafted these days? You remind me of some high school music junkie giving your own personal opinion on why Justin Bieber is better than the Beatles. The young generation may think that. But is it true? Haha.. The talent just doesn't add up to what The fab 4 were doing in their heyday. Just don't start a topic on why 'heady' is better with a member name 'heady' and whatever numbers you happened to use. Enjoy craft beer but leave your comparisons at home. Neither of these dipa's deserve any bad talk such as disappointed. Hell, if you want to talk what big Iona's I'd rather have than heady I'd take anything from Russian river over it and I know I'd rather have a dreadnaught over it. No question about it.

its just funny to rate a beer based on "drinkability". I'm pretty sure Miller or Bud or someone made that phrase up to boost their sales with people who don't actually like beer. 'drinkability' is kind of a prerequisite... Not a defining characteristic.
Pliny is a fantastic beer, if you don't think so you're probably an east coast homer. That said, I would take some fresh heady over some fresh pliny 10x/10. No comparison in my book.

PtE is good, but IMO, HT is better. Plus, plenty of very good DIPA's now being made available on the east coast. Enjoy By comes to mind and gives PtE a run for my palate.

Absolutely. There are many, many great breweries out there, Vermont just has more than its share per capita.

PtE was one of the first handful of DIPAs I ever had. It blew me away at the time. I'm going to have to trade for Heady someday to see why it is heralded so freakin' much.

Your not trying to crucify Pliny? You might be a tad arrogant. Who are you? Go rate Pliny low. That's the value of your opinion. Near zero. Now go drink your favorite beer and be a fanbnoy.

I was lucky enough to get both for the first time only a few weeks apart. Both were great. I thought Heady was more of a palate wrecker while Pliny was more citrus hoppy. Very different brews, not really comparable.
