AleSmith Brewing’s (San Diego) Speedway Stout comes in many forms. At least on tap it does. We’re talking dried cherries, Bulleit Bourbon soaked oak chips, cocoa nibs and more. As far as Speedway Stout in a bottle, there are fewer. The base offering features Ryan Brothers Coffee. Harder to get – Barrel Aged Speedway Stout.

Released once before is a “brewer’s blend” featuring Speedway and a mix of Vietnamese coffee blends on tap. It’s nearly instant success has made it a candidate for bottles too.

One of our brewers had the idea to add this blend of four Vietnamese coffees, known in Vietnam as Cà Phê Sūa dá, to our popular imperial stout. The result was an instant hit! The coffee beans were slowly roasted at low temperatures and then brewed by Alesmith with traditional phin-style filter that gently percolates water through the ground coffee. The result is an intensely aromatic and bold tasting coffee that complements the notes of chocolate and roast in this massive stout.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ 4 Vietnamese Coffee Blend)
    Availability: 750 ml bottles
    Arrival: TBA

    12% ABV

This IMO is the best variant of their non-BA Speedway, and easily trumps many BA imperial stouts. It really does smell and taste very much like a silky, smooth, BA stout.

Anybody know if this will see all of Alesmith's distribution network or will it be CA only?

Ca phe sua da always has condensed milk in it... so I'm wondering if this will be part of the stout if it is just the inspiration. Otherwise, I have a hard time seeing what the big deal is with using Vietnamese coffee as Vietnamese coffee (as well as rice) is pretty shitty quality stuff.

Was regular Kopi Speedway brewery only or was it limited distribution?

Hopefully I'll see this in Mass or RI. Doubt it, though.

4/btls pp brewery only, so I'm guessing the same, but I haven't seen anything definitive either way yet.

Thanks! That's what I remember also. I can't imagine that this would be any different.

Their Brown Paper Ticket system is the best distribution system in the area. I can't imagine that they won't continue to use it.

This is an interesting point. I have yet to have VCSS but I'm guessing the flavor of the coffee blends well with the base beer. I have this theory that you don't need to use the best, most expensive beans to produce a great coffee stout--you just have to find a coffee that works well with the beer you're blending it with. For instance, Dark Lord uses Intelligentsia beans but I never see anyone citing DL as an example of a proper coffee stout. With VCSS, however, it's highly regarded as the best of the Speedway Stout variants (with the original being no slouch to begin with).

I don't doubt that regular coffee beans can be used to produce outstanding stouts, but the moment I see "Vietnamese coffee" being used as an ingredient in a stout, it forces me to question what it is about Vietnamese coffee that will make the stout unique. If it has a passing resemblance to ca phe sua da, then I have to imagine it will have elements of espresso with condensed milk. But if it's based solely on "four Vietnamese coffees", then I would have a hard time telling my non-Vietnamese friends what it is about Vietnamese coffee that makes it quintessentially Vietnamese. That doesn't make me any less interested in acquiring it though...

I agree. I could be wrong, but I doubt they use condensed milk in the blend so it's really about using coffee beans that sound somewhat exotic (ie, kopi luwak/alamid/civet coffee), which is fine especially if the results are great. I'll surely be doing my best to acquire some VCSS!
