Just curious what fellow BAs think about "hoarding" beer..

I went to the store today, and bought four Parabolas. Initially, I only put two in my basket, and later asked the cashier if there was a limit. When responded with, "what do you mean?" I knew I was free to take as many as they had. I went back to pick up one more (there where six in total), and suddenly felt compelled to take two more instead. As I left the store and drove away, I started to feel guilty.

I guess I've always abided by the "two bottle limit," whether or not it's being enforced. I don't really think about it, it's just second nature or something. And if there's ever just two of a beer left, I always only take one and leave one for the next guy. (No, I'm not like super nice/ethical or anything - just the way I am about beer I suppose!)

However, I don't think I've ever caught a beer release just right (like today) (thanks to my local BAs for the heads up btw!) and it felt so good to walk in and see SIX bottles of a beer that I've been wanting to try for some time now. Usually, I go from place to place, and totally strike out on the limited stuff. So when I saw it sitting there, I guess I got greedy all of a sudden.

At any rate, I wanted to know what your philosophy is regarding beer hoarding. Do you think it's ok in any circumstance to buy as much as you'd like (after all, it's your money) and not worry about the person who comes after you? Or do you buy a certain amount and leave some behind? Or do you only buy one or two in an effort to spread the wealth?

Almost anything I buy multiples of, I end up sharing with friends or trading anyway, so it all kind of evens out in the end.

I'll BM you my address so you can send me one for free because you feel so guilty about it.

First come, first served. I usually buy as much as I can afford, and "spread the wealth" by trading it for other beers I want, but either didn't get in time or don't have access to. I'm sure there are plenty of BA's that have the opposite opinion.

Honestly, for me, it has to do with whether I've had the beer before and liked it . . . I'll always buy as much Pliny and Blind Pig as a store will let me, basically because I know I'm going to drink it all. Same for Beachwood stuff. I don't think I'd buy up my limit just because I knew I could trade/hoard it, especially for something I'd never tried before.

I honestly would prefer to get a maximum of 2-3 bombers of something limited, one for now, one for later and another for either trading to the less fortunate or to age even longer. With that being said, I do adhere to the limits set by the stores and will not go from place to place to pick up bottles if I've already gotten at least 1 or 2.

I think the fact that you left two on the shelf absolves you of any hoarding crimes. Feel lucky, not guilty!

I think you should buy whatever you can afford, while adhering to any limits imposed by the stores at which you shop, and not feel guilty about it at all. But the next time (or several times) you go to pick up a limited release and they're all gone, think back to your OP and then move along. Cheers.

I try to walk the line between these two philosophies; leaving some for the next guy but also buying enough that I can throw them in as an extra in a trade to those less fortunate. For example, in a trade I just completed, I threw in a Parabola I had out of three and an Older Viscosity I had out of four as extras because, as far as I know, said trading partner hasn't had either one before and told me he was just getting into stouts, and I had what seemed to me as an excessive amount for my own personal consumption. When KBS came out, I was one of the lucky ones to get the tickets, and also managed to get some around town too. First thing I did with them was ship a 4 pack off to my brother in law who had no chance of getting any, and shared them with others who came over who were too late to the game. I figure that while I might be robbing someone else the chance to get the limited stuff, I'm still beering it forward to someone who had even less of a chance than the potential guy in the store after me.

I feel like your behavior is quite different from those who follow delivery trucks from dropoff to dropoff buying up every case of some select dIPA or Bal- stout, only to sell those beers on eBay. As long as you're not artificially altering the supply/demand of a beer, then good on you.

Never hoarded beer since I can't afford it. But I'm happy to at least try things once. BUT that's not to say I wouldn't do it if my budget was not an issue!

Wait....let me back up, I did buy a fair amount of KBS when it was released. Nevermind.

It isn't your fault the store doesn't have bottle limits. Buy 'em up.

I don't see a problem. I bought a bunch of KBS this year. But I've traded away a bit of it at $4$ (or slightly less in some cases) and given away more to friends and family. I did the same with FV13. But to me 4 bottles doesn't quite qualify as hoarding even if you drank all 4.

Six bottles of anything is not hoarding. You have no idea what kind of nefarious shit has gone on with limited releases.

Sometimes I think that it has to do with availability to the community - if you know a lot of people that were waiting on a specific beer, don't buy it all up, especially if there is only one place that will have it in stock.

If no one is breaking down the doors, and there are a lot of places that have it, yeah go for it. I think you should know your own community enough to make the right choice. If you do still feel guilty, throw a party and invite your block/building/neighbors to try it out

Eh, this topic has been analyzed ad nauseum, so I don't think it warrants re-hashing though one thing you wrote intrigues me. You said you leave one behind when you see that there's only two left, yet you took eight in this case. So why the change? If it's all about advocacy, why take more than two or three, rather than throwing down $120+ on a beer you've never had?
