A friend let me help drink two sixes of Cigar City he bought (Florida Cracker and Hotter than Helles). As the can touched my mouth and I took the first drink, all those memories of 80's and 90's swill in aluminum cans rushed back. I really struggled to take the second and third drink.

Is that not bizarre?...how the brain can open its vault and retrieve a "taste" memory and apply it to your thinking. To get over it I kept telling myself, "It's not the same as then...the canning is better...you won't taste the aluminum anymore." I closed my eyes and focused only on the taste, trying as hard as I could to find a hint of aluminum. Naturally it wasn't there, and I was able to get past it.

Odder still, when I first had Dale's Pale Ale it did not produce that effect at all. Maybe it's because it came in cans only, and that's how I first "learned" it. I've had so many Cigar City beers (only on tap or bottled), maybe my brain couldn't process the thought of having their beer in a can.

Anyone else experience this? I think canning is fine otherwise.

People can make fun, but I pour all of my canned beer into something ... even if it's just a plastic cup on fishing trips or whatever. It always tastes like good beer and not like the can, so for me it's worth it.

You are experiencing sense memory, as Sammy says, use a glass.

This is probably just because they were Cigar Shitty brews not because of the cans. Seriously though, I love cans! Any beer that should be enjoyed fresh, should come in cans IMO. They are lighter, more durable, and there is no light exposure. What could be better? I also agree with the above posts about drinking it out of glass. That should solve any problem you may be having.

I can't help but wonder how some beers will age in cans though like a barley wine.

I pour all my beers into a glass of some sort (depending on the style I am drinking of course). I cannot remember the last time I drank straight from the can (or bottle for that matter).

I guess I never cared about what vessel my beer came in as long as it tasted great. I mean how many people complain that soda comes in a can vs a glass bottle. Just wait until beer is in 2 liter plastic bottles.

I'll always pour them in a glass unless Im not at home. They never taste as good to me from the can so I prefer to pour them in a glass.

Real Mt Dew- Cans> fountain > .......................... bottles.
Do a side by side and you can tell a difference.

Its seems like a odd debate because most of us serve in a glass anyway.....but for me I don't get any of that. I never drank any of the bad canned beer of the 60-70-80's.

their is no bad memories to fight for me. My only memories of cans are good

Either pour it into a glass or (my recommendation) keep drinking good beers from cans until you've conditioned yourself to enjoy them.

I usually pour canned beer into a glass, but for me some beers just feel right straight from the can. Especially Four Peaks Hop Knot IPA and San Tan Hop Shock, both a pretty solid AZ local IPAs and if I get a six pack I'm drinking at least a couple of them without a glass.

One day I'll drink a Ten Fidy, but I can bring myself to do it because of the style and the price. Just doesn't feel right.
