Neither lived up to the "hype" for me. The Lunch I had was 2 days old so quite a bit fresher than the Pliny I had, but I didn't think there was much difference between the two. Both very good, but I don't think they warrant the hype and the price tag. I think Double Jack is just as good if not better than those, and it's a lot cheaper and easier to get.

Mean Old Tom is the one MBC product I found to be meh. there was nothing bad about it. just didn't impress me.
I think Lunch is a special beer, on par with Pliny. I think Zoe and Peeper are great beers. I think Mo is a very good Pale Ale.

Here in North Jersey I haven't seen Lunch on the shelf since November. I did get one bottle but it was out of the back room. Unfortunately, I see alot of old product on the shelves. I see Peeper from December everywhere.

Word. I have no doubt that Lunch is incredible, as it I have heard nothing but good things about it. However, the bottle I had was unfortunately absolutely NOTHING to write home about. And that is being quite generous to be honest. I was seriously questioning my palate, untill I read omnicientcause's post above, that the batch I had was not as good as previous ones. The bottle I had had an AWESOME nose, but the taste was just bad. Absolutely nothing going on besides a crisp bitterness and a slight fruitiness.

Maybe I just got a bad batch of Lunch, and then tried Mean Old Tom, which you said was actually a "meh" beer, and so just happened to be quite unlucky in the brews that I ended up trying. I have their porter sitting in my fridge (kind of buzzed and forgot what it is called), so hopefully that one delivers, but if it doesn't I will be a sad panda.

You're right that Double Jack is easier to get, but at around $5 a bottle Pliny is still cheaper.

Hmmm I usually find pliny near home (was a bit more expensive than that (odd cuz I bought it all the time when I was home in Cali), I think I got it for around $7, but I agree that Both are phenom.com. I think I would take pliny if pressed at gunpoint, however double jack is no doubt a fantastic beer.

RR stopped distributing to Washington a few months ago :slight_frown: but before that Pliny was typically $4.99, available for a few days every month. DJ is around $8 for a bomber IIRC, not sure about the 4-packs. Agree though, both are great beers. Never had Lunch and probably never will, given the disparity in East-West distribution.

If you can't bother to try it before asking, I wouldn't want to give you my opinion.
    Seems a bit narrow minded.

I agree completely. I posted this thread because I am just curious as to others opinions on this site. There are a lot more people with far more experience than me, and I think that while I consider myself to have already been around the block, beer-wise, for my age, I have so much to gain from learning from those with more refined and experienced palates than mine. The only reason I posted this thread is because I was so damn excited to try this one, and so wanted to see what y'all felt bout the matchup, so I could compare it as soon as I formed my own opinion, and in that order.

That said, I posted this thread then immediately tried the beer. I didn't read shit until long after I tried it and formed my opinion/reviewed it.

Edit: pardon my run-on sentences and absolutely impeccable comma usage. I'm a few brews in....deal with it

Shouldn't base your tastes on what others tell you.
Try it, and then tell others how disappointed you were.

But your disappointment was attributed to others building it up.

Again, I agree, and did just that - check out my review. I was just curious, and so jumped the gun on my post, but waited to read the responses till after I tried it. Also, when I got into craft, I learned to develop in my palate by reading others opinions first, then trying to pick out what they did in the respective beers. Comparing my palate to others was the most effective way for me to grow as a beer lover, and the moment I knew my palate had matured and that I had come of age in my beer tastes, was when I no longer felt the need to read about a beer before I tried it. In the spirit of this thread, using IPAs as an example, a reaction of "WOW THIS IS BITTER" turned into "maybe I get some fruitiness in this", and eventually resulted in me being able to pick out and isolate the unique subtle nuances in the hop character of each IPA I tried, all from learning what I should be picking out from those who could, and using that as a way to hone in my perception of taste.

And in this case, my disappointment was attributed to it being a disappointing bottle. I can tell the difference between not living up to the hype, and it just not being that great. While the former is disappointing, the latter is even more so, and unfortunately, this one happened to be both. But apparently this release was bad, so I will for sure check out the next one, as our local CoOp's new BrewDude apparently seems to have been able to snag at least bottle or two of Lunch from every few releases, and so I will fosho do a re-review if I grab another.

I can get a 4 pack of Double Jack for $12 or less every day of the week. MBC rings in around $7 for 16.9oz. (Obviously I need to trade for Pliny) but its too hard to get even on the west coast.

If you want Pliny (or any RR) I think It is easier to order from Gary s.

Lunch on tap tasted like club soda with hops in it. That was during the winter and I heard they might have been having issues at the brewery at the time.

Not a fair fight. Pliny wins by a landslide.
