Like many, I started out just drinking beer, and then drinking good beer. Then I started seeking better beers, and buying gems when available, even if I was not immediately available to drink them.... Now I have amassed a collection of decent beers, and thoroughly enjoy the selection process for the first beer of the evening. But after that, I get flummoxed, as I want to enjoy each beer "fresh," or on a clean palate. I need some "second and third round" beers.

    I know, 1st world problems...

But still. Not enough days on the calendar to enjoy each on a clean palate. Have to double and triple up. Any ideas? Similar problems?

OK, for example, I have just become a lucky owner of a few 4 packs of 12 oz BA Black Out Stout, from Great Lakes. I have enjoyed one of them as my first beer of the eve, and now am considering drinking a Parabola, but have never had one before. I am hoping that I can appreciate the "newness" and all the subtleties of this beer, as it is also one that I have looked forward to drinking for a long time...

Do I open it, or do I wait until tomorrow, and have it as my first beer, and then fret about what to have second tomorrow? Or just pop it now, and enjoy?!

I think I'm leaning toward now...

Drink some water in and take a break in between... You should be ok. :-)

Give the man a break, he has a drinking problem. I find myself in the same predicament, although I don't have nearly the collection that you appear to have. Sticking with the same genre of shelf or sessionable beer is what I usually do when I move to the 2nd or 3rd round etc. It kind of creates a whole experience around the "highlight" beer of the evening. Just my humble opinion.

Drink it now. No one is impressed with your collection. My girlfriend's husband buys bottles upon bottles -- and for what? He's always away on business and I'm the one who ends up drinking them. This "problem" could have been averted if he just drank what he bought.

I feel you on this. I have come across the same problem. I will try to drink 1 "first time" beer first, then move on to other beers of what I had already tried earlier in the week that I had multiples of.

When I have an inventory that requires me to drink more than 1 "first time" beer (when I get greedy at the beer store), I try to drink 2 beers of the same style so that I can compare and contrast. If not, I will drink a lighter body beer first, cleans the palate with water and/or cracker/bread, and then move onto the full body/IPA beer.

But your right, definitely a good problem to have.

Digging in.... Wow. Thanks for the encouragement. I need to deplete the cellar/collection. Problem is in buying multiples... and multiple beer types at a time. If they just didn't release new beers every week...

    You're fucked.
The only way to straighten this out is to box up your cellar and ship it to me.

What I need are a bunch of aggressive BA "friends" that are willing to have a "tasting" to cut the collection....

I kinda have the same problem. When I have beers I traded for I want to drink them on a fresh palate. I usually double up on my "new beers" and use a palate cleanser between the two. If I want more I usually drink something I know and love such as torpedo.

It's a good problem to have!!

I probably drink beer once for every four times I buy beer. And when a seasonal or one-time release comes out you gotta buy a few. So yeah, it tends to stack up after awhile. I know some of you would scoff at my collection, but at last look I have 197 bottles of 77 different beers. The bitch is some of them you hate to open because they can't be replaced, but beer is to enjoy not look at. When I do have time to drink I will have 2 or 3, and I have never felt the first beer in any way tainted my perception of the subsequent choices.

2 or 3 beers out of your Cellar just because? Good for you, I usually take 4 bombers out of my Cellar for things like Memorial Day Parties, 4th of July. I like to share some really good beers with my people, not because it's a Wednesday.

I guess a kegging setup will solve this.
dump all bottles in a keg, cap on CO2, and enjoy them all at once.

Seriously we can do some trading for one of those BA Blackout 4packs, since you have a few of them. I only got my hands on 1 4pack, and I'm down to 2 bottles. Do bottleshares man, thats the way to go, and thats how I've gone through 2 BA Blackouts. Bottleshares are the way to go, lots of people get to try your beer, and you get to try theirs. But do sit on a few of those Blackouts because they will get better with age

Easy solution: start with an imperial / BA stout. Then drink a sour. Then another stout. Then another sour. Repeat as necessary.
