Has enjoying craft beer made us elitist?

I am reminded of not too long back when I sat down at a bar with a friend and as I ordered a Chocolate Yeti for myself, he scoured the beer list for any Blonde - where upon I pointed out Isabella, simply because it was brewed by Kern River.

Fast forward to two bombers in front of us, I then asked for two taster glasses so that we could try one another's beers. After my friend poured some Isabella for me (where I basically tasted grass that cows eat in a meadow [to each their own]) I then poured out 2 ounces of my Yeti - which my friend vehemently denied simply because it was a dark beer.

I was immediately almost somewhat offended, and as you can tell now, still kind of pissed. At the end of the day, again, to each their own; but at least try something decent before you go back to your urine looking lager.

Your decent is his disgusting stuff.
Yes, the danger is in thinking that our taste and opinions are definitive.I don't enjoy macro lagers and at one time savagely criticised them. But with advancing years it dawned on me that they were actually what many people like and prefer and are good in their own right.
When I talk about "good" beers and brewers what I really mean is that I like them. There is no objective criterion of quality.

Elitist, no but some folks just will not try "dark beer". As you said, to each his own. No harm no foul. Just more Yeti for you.

I am elitist and I don't care. Beer relativism is bullshit. Many beers and styles are objectively superior to others.

If I think a beer is better it is better. Simple as that.

Haha, JK, plenty of room in the world for folks who enjoy things differently than other folks. They say variety is the spice of life. If you know a man whose tastes in anything never change, chances are you visit him in the graveyard.

Can't understand why you'd be offended/pissed because he didn't want to try the beer you were drinking.

BTW--there are plenty of terrific lagers (never had Kern River, though). I can think of many instances where I'd prefer a pilsner or Helles to a stout.

I love the darker brews my fiancé is a fan of blue moon
And that's all. But however I have got her to like some lambics
And Bigfoot. She likes the light sweet beers.

Would you have felt differently about it if he would have tried it and spit it all over the bar or turned to you with that "what the fuck did you just give me look?" Don't sweat it. I gave up on converting macro drinkers to craft drinkers. If they are curious and ask about it, I will discuss it with them. Otherwise, why waste the time and give away great beer so that someone can tell you how terrible it is? No thanks.

No, you are not elitist. Rather the ignorance that used to be the exclusive domain of macro/light-lager drinkers -- in which everything dark and/or cloudy must be disgusting -- has come full circle, so that for many "craft" beer drinkers everything light and/or fizzy/yellow must be inferior.

The way you speak about Isabella makes you sound like an elitist.

I had a similar revelation not long ago. Now I don't really make any attempt to share my interest in beer with friends unless they make some kind of gesture that they're interested. After all, I really couldn't care less about the musical styles that my friends seem to enjoy, why should they care about the beers that I enjoy?

To the OP, if you're still kind of pissed about your friends denial of your beer, I would have made the same denial if one of my good friends offered me a sour. Some people just know what they don't like and you shouldn't be upset with them for it.

Stuff like this, and not letting others enjoy what they choose to is what makes you come off as elitist.

Ain't it the truth? They can't all be a Munich Helles, but we make do with what we have available to us.

I get that everyone has a different pallet and the vast majority of beer drinkers go for the macro lagers, which is fine and all. But I don't understand why people wouldn't even try a sip of something new. You won't know if you don't like it until you try it. Expand your horizons.

Not to sound like a dick, but there is no us. We're just people who love beer. No different than people who love birds or cat farts.

OP states that his friend scoured the list for a blonde. The friend clearly likes such beers, and if that is the case I can see why he would steer away from something like Chocolate Yeti. It seems likely that this person has been exposed to dark beers before and has found them disagreeable. I wouldn't go around offering Ruination to friends of mine that don't like IPAs.

You are not an elitist, but sound exactly like the kind of person I hope to never share a beer with. So while you might be offended, I'm certain you so called friend, deep inside, doesn't really like you that much and is holding onto the friendship out of consistency. I also think you give good beer a bad name. Sorry

Why not? Then you could get pissy when they declined and start a thread about it.
