Friend and I were planning to open some bottles and hoping to find someone with a BVDL to join. We would bring Rare, Vanilla, 2009 BCS bomber, and then maybe another bottle (e.g. Kentucky Brunch). Trying to keep it relatively small though so not hammered by the end but still getting good pours from each bottle. BM me if interested - can work out details from there.

    Chicago/suburbs area preferred.

    Thanks.

Let me get this straight: you're looking for somebody in the Chicago area with a Bourbon Vanilla Dark Lord to open his/her bottle with you and your tasting group, and you're sweetening the deal with Bourbon County variants?

There was a guy who posted similar threads in the past - I think he was looking for older vintages of DL to extend his group's vertical - and the general consensus was that unless you offer up equally rare beers to open, nobody is going to respond.

If you want a stranger showing up to your party with a BVDL, you'll probably have to offer a few other BADL's, or something similar. Or at least that's what has worked for me in the past...

What if he also offers blackjack and hookers?

nate pretty much nailed it. if you want to get a stranger to bring a vanilla dl to your tasting, you've most likely got to offer up some higher caliber stuff. think about it: you probably couldn't trade every bottle you named combined for a vanilla dark lord.

I was thinking about it as a trade initially. If Rare + Vanilla + 09 BCS + Kentucky Brunch doesn't come close to landing a BVDL, I'll gladly forget the whole thing.

Edit: the person I had in mind here was someone who scored one at DLD who hasn't had Rare or some of the others, thus avoiding Venn Diagram issues.

i guess i didn't word my thoughts on the trade viewpoint well. think about it like this. let's say you have 4 people at a tasting (assume there's no friend aspect and that they're all strangers) and they all bring one bottle each, one of which is a vanilla DL. would you trade 1/4th of your vanilla DL for 1/4th of a bottle of rare? likewise for BCBVS and kentucky brunch. i might for a group of friends if i'm up for being generous, but not a total stranger.

This kind of sucks. What if, and believe me this is a hypothetical, there is a guy or gal out there with a BVDL that just wants to enjoy it with others and doesn't want to drink it alone? Maybe they'll see this invitation as an opportunity.

If you can find someone to crack a regular Dark Lord for that, you'll have done well.

You can forget about Bourbon Vanilla. I've seen people offer anywhere from 10-16 bottles for ONE.

My wife has one that we're saving for the birth of our first child (which will be happening in probably around 2016). If you somehow stalk me, befriend me, don't murder me, and become some sort of atheist god father to my child, you still only have a 50/50 chance of getting 1 oz of it. <- cool doodes use emoticons.

Meanwhile, I have a 2012 muerte that I might be persuaded to share at an upcoming tasting event.

Yeah, that's the main difficulty here, as there are two of us offering these bottles, so our per person offer is lessened. I would throw in more bottles, but then that cuts against the objective of not taking on too many high ABV beers. I could swap something in, e.g. Brandy Huna for 2009 BCS. We could work it so the person bringing BVDL gets 1/2 and each of us 1/4, something like that. This was the "details" part of it.

I'm basically trying to strike at this a different way. If I had a BVDL and hadn't had some of these other beers, I could either trade for all of them and have no BVDL, or drink the whole thing and then figure out a way to obtain Rare and others later, which can be a pain in the ass. I realize I may be working with a small subgroup here, i.e. has BVDL, doesn't have Rare/others and wants them, etc. If it doesn't work out, fine.

Telling me to forget about BVDL may be prescient. This, however, is absurd.

If you could add one or two more quality bottles it might be easier. Something like a Cantillon Fou Foune, Bruery Black Tuesday or Chocolate Rain. Cigar City Hunahpu's.

Problem is most BVDL holders have tried everything you listed (since it is local), and I am guessing you guys have not tried BVDL. The Kentucky Brunch is the only out of area so that one is probably good to have in there.

You need to lure someone with something they haven't tried

You would have us believe that this person's only options are to drink this bottle by themselves or with OP and his friend, two total strangers? You don't suppose that the majority of people who attended Dark Lord Day already have drinking buddies, or more likely a full-fledged tasting group?

Impossible? No. Implausible? I think so.

Happened with a guy up here in the Detroit area a few weeks ago. He never really got "in" with a tasting group and just had(has) a bunch of good beer and mead sitting around cuz he feels about about opening big bottles by himself. As it turns out, newbies were allowed to buy barrel aged Dark Lord as well.
