While I was away on vacation Mystic announced the recall of Entropy. When I got home from my trip I arrived to find my bottle of Entropy had exploded on my home bar and managed explode so violently that it broke my Duvel glass.

I let Mystic know and was quickly contacted by one of the brewers who apologized and told me to swing by the tasting room or give me their address so they can drop off a package. I was delighted to find a gift certificate for the shop, a Mystic snifter, AND and replacement Duvel Glass. This is a great example of going above and beyond and these guys really standing behind their product.

With that said, if you are sitting on an Entropy, definitely return it to the tasting room or store you got it because these things will blow and it isn't pretty.

On the other hand, I drank one last week with a friend who didn't want to return it. It is a fantastic beer. Drink immediately or return.

I love hearing these kind of stories. This is what makes the craft beer world so awesome!

Very nice generosity. They do seem like good peeps over there.

Did it gush like hell when your friend opened it?

It didn't. It was pretty tame. Definitely more carbonation than when I had it at the taproom, but a very pleasant experience.

If you chill it the yeast won't be active. Open carefully and enjoy a truly exceptional beer.

I had a brief chat about Entropy with the brewer at ACBF. He said they'll not be deterred and plan on brewing it again. Which is great news because it is a truly phenomenal beer. I love what Mystic's been up to.

Don't get the kudos. Replacing bad beer is one thing, potential of replacing limbs is another.

Hope they aren't standing to close behind their product.

I think it is great that this brewery went out of their way to get you a replacement glass from another brewery in addition to the glass from their brewery/gift certificate - I am always appreciative of a company that is willing to admit their mistake and compensate the consumer.

i understand the sentiment, but if you look at what actually happened with entropy i don't think it's warranted to criticize them. the likelihood of "alcohol tolerant yeast" popping up and continuing to ferment a very high ABV beer is really low, and they did a lot of work to make sure it wasn't infected. very strange and unfortunate scenario.

i think they've been taking responsibility admirably for what was a freak (and potentially very expensive for a small business) accident.

I don't know about you, but I typically duct tape a strip of nails to all of my bottles.

    Diff'rent strokes, I guess....

The amount of pressure exerted from the gasses being put out causes the bottle to explode. It is not a thin walled bottled like your typical 12 oz bottle and can withstand a higher leek of pressure. If the OP was standing near the bottle at the time there could have been very serious injuries.

My understanding is that this is incorrect. While I never had a bottle of Entropy myself, how it was explained to me is that the beer was never meant to carbonate at all, but rather be consumed flat (like SA Utopias). So, in fact, the bottles are less sturdy than even standard beer bottles, which is why they are so prone to explode.

Obviously still a big mistake, and the folks at Mystic seem to be very concerned and disappointed by the whole ordeal. But just wanted to clarify that point about the bottles themselves.

(And yes, it is very tasty.)

That's awesome - well done Mystic.

The great thing about small breweries is that there seems to be five of them that are run by good eggs for every one owned by shitheads.
