I hated the 2012 but I liked 2013 Double Crooked Tree. Didn't find them all that similar.

One of the first beers I really obsessed over - had it on tap at first and was completely blown away. I couldn't wait for it to come around each of the past two years, and it remains a top (I dunno, 20? 25?) beer for me. In terms of powerfulness, akin to Stone's Double Bastard (among amber-type ales, that is). A real crusher.

Summit hops? Is that what Gubna uses? If so, count me out.

Blech. It's Founders so I'll give it a sample when it's on tap somewhere locally, but I have a feeling I will want nothing to do with this.

yeah, but devil dancer uses a preposterous 10 hop varietals (impossible that all 10 are detectable, but there's so much hop flavor/aroma that it probably comes close). GUBNA was single hopped with summit, hence it was all garlic and onions (and weed). however, GUBNA recently added cascade hops to pine/grapefruit it out a little. i haven't been able to find it fresh so i have no idea if it worked. devil dancer has a nice dose of tropical fruit, but it still doesn't quite jump over to being that palatable.

the widely available beer that gets summit right, by the way, is green flash DIPA. i'm not 100% sure it *has* summit since i'm just going off flavor/aroma detection (not external knowledge), but it hits just the right balance of funky dank green onion and citrusy / sweet fruity. i love that beer. edit: looks like it's summit and nugget. kind of amazing... nugget is a beautiful (and itself somewhat dank and vegetal as well as a little fruity) hop, but very mellow. they must use a fucking ton of it.

This sounds like bottled vomit to me. You guys can split my 4 pack up betwixt yourselves.

The price and undesirable flavor keep me away from this beer.

    agreed

What are people paying for this stuff? It was $6/bottle in my area last year, I don't know if any local stores were selling 4 packs.

Grabbed a 4 pack from the brewery today. Same price point as KBS, $19 per pack. Bottled May 24th, so just a little under two weeks old, so this will be the freshest I've ever had it.

Served cold, nose is mostly citrusy piney resin, no hints of the onion garlic scent that's overpowered it in the past. Seems a lot more balanced on the palate this year. Still absolutely bitter as hell, but I noticed more of a malt presence than what I remember. Lots and lots of hop flavors going on here (10 varieties, after all) so near impossible to distinguish individual flavors, but I do notice the Simcoe is a lot more subdued than in years past, and to me, what tastes like Cascade and Centennial seem to be pushed to the front some more. Good carbonation and body.

Definitely the most balanced batch of this yet (even though it's still a massively bitter hop bomb), and certainly my favorite rendition so far. I'd pick up at least one bottle to try it or get a sampler on draft if you were put off by it before. It'll be interesting to see if certain flavors fade or become more prevalent as time goes on.

Totally meant Summit, not Simcoe, by the way. Though I'm sure Simcoe's in here somewhere.
