Sorry ... this bracket is a fail already. No Mickey's on the list. :sunglasses:

Mickey's is a malt liquor per BA! If anyone can track down enough malt liquors to do an all-malt liquor bracket get at me when I've recovered from this in about five years.

As other participants have noted, there were some interesting findings in this tourney. First, the "bottom of the barrel" beers actually weren't that different from those that receive decent scores on BA. Second, almost all beers that came in a green or a clear bottle were moderately to very skunky, yet beneath the skunk was often more flavor (definitely more hop notes) than we got from the usually "unoffensive" (but often boring) brown bottle and canned beers. Third, Rolling Rock must be made with 99% corn because it was the only beer that blatantly smelled like creamed corn. Fourth, Batch 19 seems to be more of a malty and sweet amber lager than a typical American adjunct lager. It also appeared much darker in color than all the other beers. Fifth, Miller Genuine Draft was the closest thing to carbonated water in our tournament. Landshark Lager was the runner up for this distinction. Sixth, many noted that Taj Mahal had an odd smokiness to it. I also found that Red Stripe had an interesting floral/perfume-y hop note that set it apart from all other beers.

My go to Gansett came up short, Gusto is pretty good stuff though.

Yep, I think Schlitz prevailed primarily by being smooth, clean, and very true to the AAL profile. The flipside of that is that it's a little boring. But even though we could at times talk ourselves into Tecate's grassy funk, Tsing Tao's skunked attempt at a Czech pils, or the fullness of Genny Cream, Schlitz just kind of puttered through the bracket being extremely competent within the style.

I was surprised to find myself voting against Gansett early on but it was harsh and even a little boozey in comparison to many of the other beers. When your beer is drinking rougher than, like, Icehouse, it's cause for concern.

Not surprised Schlitz Gusto won. I believe it uses the least amount of adjunct in the beer out of all of them. For me personally, it actually tastes decent.

“Schlitz just kind of puttered through the bracket being extremely competent within the style.” Very well put! I am not typically a fan of AAL beers but I bought a case of Schlitz 1960s formula beer a couple of summers ago and I enjoyed drinking it. I think that it is a tasty beer for an AAL.

    Cheers!

Ugh, Michelob Golden Draft hands down one of the worst I've ever had, albeit that was YEARS ago, didn't know they still made it. Recently had a Hamm's tall boy @ an Indians game & was surprised how well it went down. Schlitz Gusto is another recent old man brew that caught me by surprise, now I find myself hunting it down in tall boy form.

Had a red stripe for the first time last night since I've been drinking craft beers. I was actually surprised by how much of the hops I could actually taste. Really wasn't that bad

Are you tasting these "blind" or does predisposition play into it?

The fact that 'Gansett and Genny made it to the final four is HUGE!!!!!!! These have become my two go to beers as of late. Genny is my after work beer and Naragansett is the beer I drink during Red Sox games. Both of these fine lagers are made right here in Rochester NY. I think Schlitz Gusto is a fine beer and very good tasting, the only issue I have with it is that the head seems weak and it is not available here in Upstate NY.

I think we answered this twice, but--two beers were poured, we voted on a winner, and the pairing was revealed.
