Depending on where in western PA you are, take a trip to either House of 1000 Beers in New Kensington or Vintage Estate in Boardman, OH & have the staff point out some good, affordable gueuze, Flanders reds & oud bruins, lambics, Berliner weiss, & bretted beers.

Cuvee des Jacobins, Rodenbach Grand Cru, Petrus Aged Pale, and Lindemans Cuvee Rene are all "shelf" sours and they are all amazing (especially the first two).

Gasthaus Berliner Weisse is a tart and affordable sleeper if you have a good beer shop close by.

Duvel for starters. Or any Trappist ale. You only get one chance to make a first impression.

Tilquin Gueuze if you can get it, usually a pretty decent price

Cuvee des Jacobins, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and New Belgium La Folie. The Jacobins and La Folie are more sour out of the 3 imo. Lindemans Cuvee Renee is very good as well and available at most places.

If you're looking for a funky/sour, Hanssens Oude Gueuze packs a pretty good punch.

Those are great Belgian beers, but the only thing here that might count as sour is Orval, which is more funky than sour.

I second this 100%. Everything from Rodenbach is great for the price. I can drink Gran Cru all day and it's not hard to get.

I feel ya, man... Just finished undergrad and gotta start paying off those loans. I would even say that the Petrus Oude Bruin, Pale Ale, and Flemish Red Ales (respectively) aren't too expensive, despite being imported from Flanders.

Acquire a Sang Royal from Cascade. Best sour I've ever had. Also Consecration from Russian River is phenomenal, as is Tart of Darkness from The Bruery

I have DFH Festina on tap right now, it wasn't any more expensive than 60 Minute. $95 for the log.

If it isn't Belgian, your probably paying too much for hyped dirt.

Couldn't disagree more. There are so many domestic breweries killing it with sours these days.

I know they arent exactly "sour" , but there are some Farmhouse ales that arent typically as pricey as the RR sours but have some of that funky taste. Bonus is that they are good summer beers

Saison DuPont Farmhouse Ale is one of my most favorite. The 24oz are only $10-$11 i think.

Most sours are going to be pricey just because of how hard they are to make and the aging process. I usually wait for bars to have them on tap, as they are more affordable that way., Bars out here in Oregon will tap Consecration or Supplication and charge like $6 for a 10oz pour.

Cascade barrel house out here in Portland make the best sours ever (check the reviews), and I have heard they make it out to PA fairly often. Their bottles are pricey but worth it (typically $20 for a 24oz)

Good luck with the sour addiction. I went through it myself but its too damn expensive. I now just have them when available or as a once in a while thing

I hope this is the next big thing- I'd love being able to get affordable Berliner Weiss in four/six packs around here.
