I think "East Berlin" ceased to exist sometime in late 1989.

@OP, I am very jealous of your friend. East Berlin is one of my favorite places in the world (and yes, I call it East Berlin). However I don't know anything "local" to recommend in terms of beer. My recommendation for the "Berlin" threads is always to go to the Weihenstephaner restaurant in the Hackesher Markt. They have the entire Weihenstephaner lineup there.

 

I am up there a lot and I have always enjoyed one of these from north of Berlin in Meck-Pom. Fantastic brew real sit and relax beer

A huge place for tourists in the heart of the city. Their beer is nothing special really, but okay to drink.

Brewbaker Brewpub
Arminiusstr, Arminiusstraße 2-4, Berlin

After a bit of confusion we found this place while in Berlin this past March. It was formerly located under S Bahn station (Bellevue) but w/in the passed couple years had moved to Arminiusstrasse in a large indoor market. The beer was fresh and outstanding. Pils was malty sweet but balanced and the pale ale was a revelation. Super clean and fruity for a pale ale.

Also had a beer named Weissenoher Klosterbräu at a wurst stand named Witty's (Wittenbergplatz 5). Quite hoppy and spicy. Real nice.

 

Klosterbrauerei Weissenohe is actually in Bavaria -- imagine that, Bavarian beer in Berlin -- gasp.

 

Great tips in this thread...going in a few weeks for first time ever to Germany.
