Just wondering, do tickers count homebrew that friends make towards their total? I know you can't add them to the site but just wondering if people count them anyway and just make up a name if it doesn't have one. Not sure if this should go here or in the homebrew section.
I would like to start something like this in the Homebrew section, like a ISO:FT but for homebrew. I think it would be wise though for homebrew trading to be for homebrew that is quality though. There is a lot of awful stuff out there, so having a few homebrew competition medals or something to tie to trades for people interested in just drinking good homebrew, or if unproven, it be disclaimed that it is a recipe looking for critique and is unproven. It would be fun I think.
No, I don't count any of my friends' homebrew that I've tried on my personal spreadsheet. They usually don't have names and the ABV (part of what I track) isn't always 100% accurate in their cases. I would also feel silly putting the brewery name as "___'s living room" or something like that, heh.
Nope. I don't track them on my "ticker" spreadsheet. God "ticker" sounds dumb, sounds like a dog's name, but that's a completely other topic for another day.
No, because there are so many beers that I have had from local and other breweries that are not even represented on this site. Let alone my friend's garage operation up the street
Seems to me this would be impossible, like trying to try all of the dishes that home cooks make, or collect art from all the amateur painters in your hometown. Tickers, and I admit to have tendencies in that direction, seem to seek consistent, known products. The vagaries, varieties, and imponderables of homebrewing would make it impossible to try particular products by particular brewers except for those at the very top ranks of the hobby, who have the time, expertise, and equipment to produce a near-pro product that is consistent and longlasting.
This would be dope coz after about a year, just like every other beer on BA, the hype machine would start to run its course, but for a good cause this time as it would give some talented home brewers some much needed exposure.
Ive done several homebrew trades and its been great (one of my brews was in the BA magazine homebrewing column, so I ended up trading with some BAs so they could try it and I could try theirs), with one exception. A BA on here sent me his beer which resulted in one of the worst bottle bombs I've ever seen (lodged glass in my cabinet), and then was completely nonchalant about it when called on it, saying, oh yeah one blew up in my friend's car and it was hilarious cuz he wasn't worthy of my homebrew. So, some kind of vetting would be a good idea, although the best way to do that would be something that would require thought, or something along the lines of having all beers be force carbonated (never heard of a beer gunned beer being a bottle bomb). As far as ticking goes, yes I tick my homebrews, as do my friends. We all use Untappd and I have all my brews up there under my homebrewery.
I know a couple of homebrewers who have entered or won local competitions, however, trading for homebrew would be tricky if you don't know who brewed it since you don't know if it's good or bad. And although homebrewers are a generous and sharing lot, if I homebrewed and had a particularly great recipe, chances are I either wouldn't share it or would leave something out or change it like cooks sometimes do with their recipes. Or maybe it's just my selfish nature.
Untappd lets you add homebrews... I would probably add a couple to get a location badge or something but I don't really drink much homebrew and if I did I would be too lazy to add every one to the app.
I would love to be able to try the homebrews composed by some BA's. I wish I could say I would trade my awesome homebrews for their's, but mine aren't awesome. Truth be told, I would pay money to certain BA's if they would ship some of their homebrew to me. I wager they wouldn't want a ton of money and I also wager that of their brews brews are damn good. Of course, this is all very illegal, but whatever....
