I have yet to have a beer that I would call too hoppy. In fact, every time I have a beer that is hoppier than the hoppiest beer I've had, it becomes one of my favorites. I want to know if there are any beers out there that are just too damn hoppy.

Palate Wrecker, Devil Dancer, and Double Crooked Tree are all unnecessarily hoppy in my opinion, to the point of not being that enjoyable to drink.

there are hundreds of too hoppy beers, unfortunately lots of folks no longer like perfectly balanced beers and think these beers are the bee's knees hence the popularity. I hope in the future in the great lakes forum, someone posts a thread called "how earthy is too earthy?"

My last homebrew, where my with my limited capacity I had halve everything in the recipe...only I forgot to do so with the hops. Letting what's left age a bit more...

Different for everyone I would imagine.

I had a pint of Weyerbacher Double Simcoe and it was too damn hoppy for my liking. Perhaps it was just the type of hop used there, as other over the top hopped beers have been tasty to me. Either way, this beer was too hoppy for me.

    I love that beer.

I also agree that it's different for everyone. I've never had a beer that was too hoppy for me to enjoy, but I've had a few that I wouldn't drink regularly because of the hoppiness.

If it feels like my face has been kicked in then it's just right. Palate Wrecker does this for me.

Worst part is that fresh Devil Dancer tastes like super bitter onions. I aged it for a bit over a year and it was way better. Still wouldn't buy it again though.

this is crazy talk. too hoppy. never heard of such a thing.

resin, palate wrecker, sucks are almost just right for me. More hops please!
the only one that was a bit unnecessarily hoppy for my personal taste was 1000 ibu by mikkeller. Still fucking tasty though... snarfed the whole thing down.

As for Devil Dancer, which I don't really like, I don't think "too hoppy" was the problem. I love overly hopped beers, but Devil Dancer just came off as harsh and too boozy. Having alot of hops certainly contributes to the problem, but I don't think it's the primary offense.

I'm glad I don't like that beer - way too expensive.

This years batch sounds like it doesn't have that problem.

I absolutely loved Palate Wrecker (fresh), not so much the stuff that is still sitting around on shelves. But even then I could only drink 2 or 3 in a sitting before it became too much. So I guess for me, nothing is too hoppy...I am a fan of all the beers listed in this thread so far.

(personally thought palate wrecker was almost there... just a smidge more and it would be perfect. hence my love of resin.)

Nope, tried each multiple times and end up pretty disappointed each time. Those beers have extreme hoppage with no eloquence. You have to have eloquence and fluency from all ingredients for things to work (see: Heady Topper).

I love heavily dry-hopped beers for the aroma and flavor. But, the brewer needs to know how to balance the boil hops or it can get out of hand.

Every year's batch has that problem and I expect this year's will be no different. The onion flavor is from Summit hops, which this beer has plenty of, and IIRC they haven't changed the hop schedule.

Meh, there's tons of great DIPAs out there that I already know I love. Won't bother with Devil Dancer again.
