I've been a huge fan of pilsners since visiting Bavaria and Bohemia. It's a simple yet wonderful brew, but can sometimes leave my palate unsatisfied...

I recently discovered imperial pilsners and wanted to get a consensus of the best or must-trys. I live in Boston and have had Jack's Abby's offerings, including 'The ABCs' (which is one of my favorite beers), but I believe those are technically IPLs.

Please share your thoughts and recommendations on any imperial pilsners or similar styles. Cheers!

    -AH

PS - I've had 'My Antonia' by Dogfish Head as well.

Personally, it seems like an oxymoron to me. If I wanted something stronger in alcohol per se, I would drink something else. I think pilsners do just fine in the 4-5% range. Lagunitas's is close to 6%, but I don't really think it is an "Imperial" pilsner.

I prefer the "imperials" stick to things like stouts (of which to be considered, should probably have 8%+).

I tried the bohemian pils offered by Narragansett a while back and I thought it was pretty damn good. Worth a try.

While I appreciate the extra ABV, the imperial pilsner style is appealing to me because of the enhanced flavor profile. They just seem to offer the malty goodness of a traditional pils with a richer flavor.

Pilsners seem to be highly disregarded in the craft beer world (and I understand why), but I think imperial pilsner could win over the skeptics...

I'll look for that, should be available near me. Thanks!

Only had one, and it left a very strong impression, I was very impressed. Boulevard Reverb. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/423/84473
Try it if you can get it, yes the ratings here are not off the chart, but it’s not the kind of style that tends to get the 4s and 5s (such as RIS, IIPA etc.).

This Odell's beer is fantastic. Just picked up a 4 pack yesterday for the 1st time this season.

I appreciate the suggestion! I think you're absolutely right - both pils and imperial pils are unlikely to get the attention/praise that other styles get... But they're still amongst my favorites!

Op, if you're active in trading you should try and get evil power from fff. I don't care much for pilsners but I thought it was pretty tasty.

I've had a few from American craft breweries. Sierra Nevada's, Rogue, Deschutes, I'm sure some others. None of them really do it for me. Good beers but none of them great.

Like others said, imperial pilsner is an oxymoron to me. That said, both Reverb and My Antonia are both damn tasty beers..

as mentioned above, lagunitas PILS is a little higher abv at 6.2% and also packs a ton of flavor for a pilsner. The balance if malt and spicy hops is perfect. It might be just what you are looking for.

No one ever gives credit to US originator of the style, the pride of Allentown - Horlacher Brewing Co. (although apparently they weren't too proud of it - they used the dba of "Hofbrau Brewing Co." on the label).

I've had sierra nevada imperial pils from that beer camp variety pack last winter. Pretty decent. But no longer available.
I've had Uintas tilted smile, but it was probably my least favorite one out of all I've tried, even though i like most of their offerings that I've had.
That swedish company with the beer in little bottles is good but not worth the price.
Breckenridge imperial pilsner is hands down the best I've tried.

I'd like to see more of these.

Formulated with Bohemain hops and corn flakes? Is Horlacher a Kelloggs subsidiary? :grinning:

They just seem unnecessary to me. It's one of those things that fit into the category of "we can do this, but should we?".

Quite a few breweries use corn flakes to good effect, e.g. Boulevard with Tank 7.
