I rarely post in this area anymore, but was looking at some hilarious old reviews of mine. Two that stand out are:

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/50795/?ba=SpdKilz

"Drinkability - Honestly, a bit hard. This is my second bomber of 13th and it is in all honesty better the second time around, perhaps because I knew what to expect. The first bomber I had I didn't even finish - this Stone is more bitter than hoppy imo."

Also, my first "sour" (btw I am a sour head 100% now and have been for years)

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/48/10482/?ba=SpdKilz

"Drinkability - Not very for me. This is my first sour and it was nothing like I expected, and sadly that is not a good thing. I would describe myself as someone who normally likes tart, bitter types of food so I naturally thought this would be something I would enjoy. As of now, it is not. I may need to give it a few more chances."

Any funny old reviews from ya'll?

[edit] BTW, just looked at my Pliny the Elder review, and I was number 1,000. It is now at over 6,500. Wow.

I've re-reviewed a lot of those *facepalm* type old reviews of mine. I remember my first IPA (ever) being Ruination and I slammed it as being one of the worst beers of all time. My second IPA was a 120min. You can imagine how that one went. Pretty funny, looking back.

I remember describing Yeti as too hoppy too.

Ehhh none really. It's more fun to look back and see what we liked, and some of the verbiage we used.

Probably all of my reviews from my first...eh...9 months?

It took me awhile to give birth to a decent reviewing practice.

The only 5 I have given is to Abrasive, which is an amazing beer, but no way I would rate it a 5 now. But it is what it is so I leave it be.

I have recently worked on re-reviewing nearly all my older reviews that were 3 sentences like the whole population of the "other" site. My novice palate vs now is a huge difference. Also appreciation for Belgian beer vs my former self is night and day. (aka Belgian beer is incredible, vs Belgian beer is weird)

Older reviews are a good argument for the over hype on here. If you hated it, you did. Could that 97 score be making you think twice about how you actually felt?

I deliberately restrained from reviewing until I had 250 beers under my belt, so I probably have fewer such reviews than some. My theory is that a majority of the straight-5 reviews/ratings on here are put up by rookies.

My older reviews are really short as well. I have been really trying not to use the same words all the time in the review which is harder than it looks sometimes. I also want it to flow and not be choppy or too wordy and repetitive.

I'm amazed at all the straight 5's for Heady. Solid beer, but if it were any other beer, I'd swear the same people would rip on the appearance.

not mine, but whenever someone brings up review that are worth noting.... this early bolt cutter review always comes to mind and makes me laugh every time i read it...

"A day to remember. Arrived to Founders on BoltCutter Release Day #1, November 11th, 2012. We made our presence known as the first in line at this ticketed event. We were greeted by a kind-spirited employee, who'se heart bears the striking resemblence of St.Nicholas on the magical eve of Christmas, suggesting we join our fellow beer brethren in the masses of the parking lot....We were obviously early. When the Clock stuck noon we were ushered in to the sound of the chicken song. As beer geeks frantically rushed to the store, our excitement reached epic proportions...would our trials and tribulations be worth the anticipation? Skip ahead to minutes later, after purchasing our bottles and appropriate bolt-cutter glasswear, we trekked across the street to experience our gift from the brewers, perhaps aj offering from the benevolent gods above. We poured the liquid gold into our glasswear. Gather round pals, for the tale of Boltcutter....

A: Pours a Bright copper red-orange, reminiscent of the rare Bengal Tiger pelt. A fluffy egg-shell white head rising from the depth of this untamed beast. Gives way to an elegant spider-web lacing (most likely resemembling the fierce Sydney Funnel-web spider (atrax robustus)

S: A bouquet of fresh Hawaiin Pineapple, Dark amber maple syrup from the majestic maples of Vermont. A slight tone of biscuit, just as grandma would prepare on our bi-weekly sunday brunch. The aroma truly fills the nares with gifts of joy and happiness.

T: Heavy Tropical Overtones with a mellow presence, giving one the feeling of an awe-inspiring autumnal sunset. The aforementioned pineapple dominates like a stallion with it's mare. As one sips the brew, the warmth of red dying coals of a huntsman midnight fire. A Floral Hop bitterness, as bitter as the loss of the beloved family ferret (RIP Gerdy).

M: Thick like a swollen Baboon rump. Creamy like fresh-churned butter as would be applied to grandma's bi-weekly biscuits. A light carbonation teases the tongue.

O: As this review comes to a close, the experience shall not be forgotten. The legend of the BoltCutter shall be passed down from generation to generation just as the stories of our time that define a people....I miss Grandma"

That is obv. not a straightfaced bolt cutter review. If it is the author needs a stern talking to.

As for the op, I don't think your impressions at the time you made those reviews are necessarily funny embarrassing or cringe worthy. That was how you felt at the time and your opinion was what it was. Just because you're a sour chugging beer master now doesn't mean it was so off the wall to be unenamored of your first one. We all prob. Felt that way about sours, hop bombs, imperial stouts at one time or another.

I think it's a little worrisome to go back and fix early reviews or to cringe at them because its kind of revisionist history and smacks of trying to cover up the evidence that at one time you were NOT one of the cognescenti here. Great to go back and revisit some of the early beers and see how your impressions have changed; no need to scrub away evidence of those early impressions (not that you were doing that; quite the opposite by bringing them to our attention!).

Sure. I lacked a lot of reference points back when I first got interested in beer. Sometimes I'll amend old reviews with subsequent experiences, but I don't mess with 'em. It's fun to see where I was and what I thought at certain points.
