The stores care, drivers and package handlers don't give a crap. The things I've seen people do to packages would make your toes curl.

Pro-Tip: list yourself as a sauce business on the label. I stole this idea from a trade partner and have been shipping as "Oak City Sauces LLC" for the past year +

I've received iffy boxes too and they made it, one even had broken bottles. When you ship bottles you can't replace it makes one paranoid.

I heard of a packet of tic tacs. Doesn't take up much space and good for a bit of noise.

I work in shipping, if someone said this to me, I would open it immediately and then tell them we cannot allow it to go out.

As stated by one former UPS employee above, I think hearing clinking from change or macaroni only makes them more suspicious that something is broken. I would rather a little sloshing that either of those options, but I just use bubble wrap and packing peanuts. Never hear a thing.

I would drink it in front of them

if I was alone in the shop and they were nice, I would turn a blind eye, I have let beer go through for some BA's, but if they are a d bag...

Nope. You can handwrite it on the written labels, or add it to your account if you have one.

No. I've sent 100 or so boxes without ever masking the sound. The vast majority of people don't mask it either. There are a billion liquids out there, and only a small handful of them are illegal to ship. I can understand it if you've already been busted for beer by your local shipping center and some employee is trying to be a hero every time you ship a box. But otherwise, noisemakers are just superstition.

If you're having an issue with nosy workers, just have Fedex pickup your boxes right from your front door ($3).

I should clarify...I almost never do the can with the pennies thing. Usually, lots of bubble wrap is your best bet, not only for cushion but for soundproofing as well. Also, Home Depot sells these BA.gs of little cardboard pyramid things that work great as filler, cushion and noise suppression.
