Didn't happen on this site, but there was another site with a local group I was on.. I was ISO a 4pack a Heady Topper from several people in this group who had cases and cases of it. I was going to take them to a couple bottleshares I have lined up in the next couple weeks, and I offered some things to trade.
From what I understand, Heady is about 12 dollars per 4pk at the brewery. I offered up about $20 or so worth of beer singles that can't be bought in this state. It was about 5 bottles, but I was going to make it a mix-6 with cigar city, troegs, and a couple others like a BA Blackout Stout. Pretty reasonable actually!

He said no, its gonna cost me 30 dollars to get a 4pk, because he had to pay for gas to bring all the cases home from Vermont.

So I said no, thats too much, and its price gouging. From all the trades and bottleshares I've done, no one has ever said, "hey, I had to pay x dollars for shipping, so you need to pay me for that, guys. I'm gonna need 5 dollars extra from everyone here" I mean could you imagine? $30 dollars for Heady Topper? Am I crazy or is that insane? I mean its not THAT hard to get, and I'm getting my own case in 6 weeks. I assure you I am not paying $30 for each 4pk.

So who is the a-hole here? Was I wrong to turn it down? Would anyone else spend 30 bucks on Heady? or is he the a-hole for charging drug dealer markups?

I'm not big on trading. But it sounds to me like you guys had different expectations, couldn't agree, didn't trade, and everything turned out fine.

    edit: Yeah, I wouldn't pay $30 for a 4-pack either, though.

Beer is worth what people will pay for it.

    I concur, though, as I wouldn't pay $30 for a 4-pack of Heady.

Keep your wits about you because there are people who want to take you for a ride. The way I see it, you were smart enough to say no and no harm done. Just remember , your local bottle shop can keep you knee deep in delicious beer for the rest of your life. So only trade with nice people.

that's standard for a lot of jackholes. They'll get theirs. If you don't trade with these people, you're doing everyone a huge favor in the long run.

I agree with your course of action by saying no. I never want to trade with people who try to tack on gas money, cost of brewery tickets, etc etc. Same for if people were getting ripped off at bottle shops and trying to pass it onto me. That particular externality has nothing to do with me or the beer itself; it's you choosing to do whatever it took to get that beer, including being ripped off- doesn't mean you can expect to be allowed to rip me off. Let's be reasonable here.

Anyways, obviously you should just trade with a Vermont resident who lives nearby and has access to fresh Heady.. it'll be easier and cheaper that way. And I think getting banned from that group is probably a good thing- it stands to reason that you wouldn't want them at your regular bottle shares anyway..

Gas money is never a part of the trade value.

    I repeat.

Gas money is never a part of the trade value.

But what about walking up hill both ways, then waiting in 10 ft of snow for 12 hours just to get 1 bottle?

You're not wrong for turning it down...a beer is only worth what consumers will pay for it. Obviously $7.50 for a can is too much for you. It isn't too much for others. So they will get to enjoy the beer, and you will not. So be it. You will live without it.

And no, he isn't an asshole. He has no obligation to charge you the price you think is fair. It is his beer, and it was a pain in the ass for them to get, and an expensive endeavor given gas and hotel and other costs.

And it seems that you've not considered that perhaps he doesn't want to sell, but is begrudgingly willing to do so if the price is right.

Was there last Thursday, albeit just a regular day in VT, and it was smooth as silk. Gonna head up for the bottle release next Thursday, hope it goes as smoothly.

Ooo thats a really interesting perspective that I had not thought about. Good point. However, I dont think he was begrudgingly trading it, he had cases of it. Not to mention I had to pay for all the out-of-state bottles that I was offering to trade. But you're right, I'll live for the next 6 weeks just fine until I get my own case.
