Is it just me, or do beer extremists suck? I mean, I love beer. I've been brewing for 3+ years, been studying and tasting great beers for 7+ years, been buying rare beers on the reg. I know a ton of dudes out there have got all my records beat by decades. But I feel that ppl can go down one of two paths. You get to a point where great beer is endless and all over the place, or you can never be happy with phenomenal beers. You are constantly searching for something that takes your heart and soul to another dimension. I mean, ppl may be searching for different answers than me with beer, but I know that when I've tried over 100 recipes of each style of beer, I've found the just of it. Now I just enjoy the beer for what it is. It's like what a wise man once said, "You consume the beer. Don't let the beer consume you."

For the most part I'm with you, except the title. I don't think they suck, I just don't quite understand the need at this stage in the game.

I agree with mmmbirra. To say they suck is a bit much, but I do agree with the overall principle of people who's entire experience is only to be a whale hunter/extremist/finicky pain in the ass.

Long ago while serving at a local pub, there was this guy at the bar rambling on, (felt like hours) about how all the beers he had tried had flaws and he was never truly happy. I poured him a glass of wine and that was the end of the conversation. *deep thoughts* :sunglasses:

On the off chance that that this is not a drunk ramble, I will quote myself from my profile page

The search for the perfect beer is like the search for the perfect wave or for perfect powder. One eventually finds that perfection does not exist, and that by looking for perfection a long and delightful succession of nearly perfect examples has been discovered and enjoyed. Cheers!

I'm sure there are people out there who are like that, and maybe even ran into a few of them myself. If they never shake off that attitude, then they were never truly into beer to begin with; it was just a momentary fetish, and they will find another one to take its place. Unfortunately for you, being the bartender meant you couldn't run the other way- good call on the wine, though.

There is a thin line between enthusiast and extremist in my opinion. I mean there are people here that plan vacations around beer destinations, drive 8 hours to visit some brewery for a bottle release party, spend a crap ton of money trading....to me all of that is pretty extreme.

Guess I'm an extremist. I'm hiking the Long Trail in Vermont next week.

That depends, did you pick that trail first and then think about what beer places were around or did you want to hit up the beer places in that area so you found that trail? Extremists in my mind think of beer first, then what they also can do in the area second.

Not saying it's a bad thing.

I'm amazed by this as well, though I'm guessing that many folks who do this are younger and/or are at a stage in their lives that makes such things possible. So maybe it's just more youthful exuberance for many rather than being "extreme."

I think my wife would plan an intervention if I drove several hundred miles for some special beer release.

I'm planning a bachelor party going around to different vermont breweries for a weekend. Can't wait. And I dont feel it's extreme, more enthusiast.

I just like finding new beer. Period. Don't care if it's transcendental or garbage, just like the fact that I'm getting something I've yet to experience.
