I'm trying to pick an offer on some Dark Lord and I have NO clue what are the better years of this beer? I thought I heard the 2013 wasn't very good, is that right??? What is the best year? Thanks fellas.

    Every year gets worse.

What do you mean pick an offer?

For someone who is neither a FFF fanboy or FFF hater, the best regular Darklord I have ever had was 08'. Good luck Dan Halen.

    Cheers,

I'm making a trade and my ISO was DL. I have some offers and now I'm trying to decide which year would be best to give a try.

You should go with the first offer then if you did not specify.

If you did, like has been said 2008 is the best.

Nah...sounds like you made an honest mistake. Pluck out whichever offer and go with it. If trading is a new endeavor and you're finding questions like this coming up, it might be best to hang back and do some research or just stick to locals for locals stuff before diving into the deep end.

I have been creeping on the trade forums for a little bit but it takes so much time to figure out things. Basically I have access to limited Belgium beers and I'm returning home this weekend and of course with the cost of additional checked luggage (not to mention the inflated price at the beer shop here) and the hassle I want to make sure it's worth it to lug these suckers back!

08 is far and away the best vintage. 12 is generally regarded as the worst. the rest i think come down to some combination of storage conditions for older vintages and personal preference for the newer ones.

It sure does take time. All the more reason not to rush into wrangling deals for beers that will be as sought after several months or a year or two from now, if not more so. If you haven't had a chance to check out AleWatcher's post on new trader tips, it's essential reading:

assuming you didn't get offered anything older than '08, my preference (sort of averaging/speculating on age when i tried them):

    '08
    '10/'13 ('13 reminds me of a mix between '09 and '10 fresh...)
    '09
    '11
    '12

Note: If this were linear, the '08 would be miles above the others, and '12 would be a few hundred yards below the others... also, pre '08 is better than post '08 anything (i have not had '04/'05)... also i think '09 (and now '13) are almost undrinkably, cloyingly sweet now, but will be nice with a bit of age (and would of course be miraculous in a barrel).

So if I want one to drink now and one to age what would you go with? I'm checking out the trading tips now.

Not '12s... you could get either one '13 and one '09-10 and do you fresh/age tasting at once, or you could get two '13s and have one fresh and one old.

best bet: get two '08s and trade them to me for two '13s +!

'08 is the best, '13 sucks.

It sounds like there isn't a clear consensus on '13!

There isn't a clear consensus on Dark Lord in general. Some people like/love it, some people hate it. You're best bet is to go with what people are saying here and grab an '08 if it's available, find a group of beer peeples in your area that would like to do a Dark Lord tasting and then you'll find out which years you like....if any at all.

Well at least it's sure to be an interesting beer. You surely wouldn't find such varying opinions from banality.

You're trading away a St. Lam for a DL?

has anyone dropped a hydrometer into a 2013 DL and tapped that there FG?

That would be a dope LIF. My guess is 1.056.
