So 2013 is quickly turning into a Saison Summer for me. I find that I love this style and that it can vary greatly depending on the creativeness of the brewer. I'll list my 5 favorites thus far, but am interested in others favorites. Saisons are rare in WI.

    1. Prairie Hop - I would buy this every week in the summer if it was available in WI.
    2. Prairie Gold - My favorite "sour" as it is like homemade lemonade.
    3. Tropic King - Good lord is this mega tropical fruit flavored. So good.
    4. Prairie Standard - Nice all around Saison that is easy drinking.
    4. Red Barn - Another nice Saison with a lemon and sweet clover taste to it.

Special mention to Sofie and Hennepin for their availability in WI.

So I love a beer that is not readily available in WI. I'm hoping that this changes in the near future. Prairie Ales, please start distro to WI since you are in IA, and IL already.

All lists of saisons should include two of the best domestic saisons out there; Hennepin and Sorachi Ace.

A couple I tried at Savor Craft last week and really liked was Cigar City Cucumber Saison and Boulevard Saison Brett. Two very different takes on the style but both are solid choices.

What's interesting about saisons is that more and more breweries are adding them to their portfolio like the great IPA rush of several years ago. However, as you would expect, the execution is lagging a little behind.

For example, here in Virginia I've recently tried saisons from three excellent breweries: Hardywood Park (Richmond), Blue Mountain (Afton) and Champion (Charlottesville). Hardywood's has the effervescence but lacked much flavor. Blue Mountain and Champion had great flavor but lacked the pop. I look forward to all three locking the style down. Such a great summer, kick-back-and-relax beer.

I'd have to second and third the Sofie and Hennepin. I've been loving Cellar Door, in fact I just got a growler of it that I can't wait to get into tonight.
