I recently put up a 2009 Darkness to get a BA Huna. I got my bottle without giving up the 2009. I had some nice offers for the 2009, but didn't take them because I have a lead on a 2008. Is it a wise investment to acquire vintage special releases with hopes of using them to acquire current bottles that I covet for drinking purposes? I'm looking at spending a considerable amount of cash for the 2008, but will it get me into conversations that I'd otherwise never get to have? My experience in vintage bottles is very limited.

The only return on investment I ever get from beer is a wicked headache and beer farts. Maybe that's what the OP is trying to land?

IMHO, you're better off holding onto vintage beers for tastings.

You get the warm fuzzy of sharing with friends, get to make more friends once the alcohol takes hold, & eventually, once you're known as a 'guy who has stuff', you'll be taught the secret handshake/head bob/fart noise & invited to orgasmic tastings featuring the best beers in the world.

All much better than hoarding or flipping or whatnot. But if that's what you want to do with your beer, I can think of worse things to sit on than vintage Darkness.

My inquiry was related to whether or not there are enough people out there that value collecting older bottles and would trade something like a King Henry for it. I can't imagine a 2008 tastes better than a 2012, but if it got me something I'd really like to try it would possibly be worth pursuing. If not, it ends up costing me a lot for not much in return.

get yourself on the 7 year Lambic/Geuze plan. You'll have trade bait for anything. Some of you know what I'm talking about.

No. I do not do this... I tend to obtain bottles and drink them very quickly

You're not flipping houses, homeskillet. If you think the beer you have will be delicious, drink it. If you think something else might be more delicious, trade it. Stop overthinking it.

For a period of time I thought I was headed for an early retirement based on my portfolio of Billy Ripken error card variations. I'm not the right guy to be asking about this.

Hate to burst your bubble, but Jose Canseco rookie year was 1986, Upper Deck debuted in 1989.

Then I guess it is up to my Topps Jim Abbot Olympic Team card to carry me to retirement.

Do they still publish Beckett? I don't even know where my cards are. I had some good ones, but now they are all into grading the alignment and cut, so who knows if they are good at all. I think I did have Canseco's rookie, wasn't it in the Topp's Traded series? I believe I was thinking Griffey Jr. being Upper Deck's big card. It has been awhile.

No Beckett needed, I lived sports cards from 1984-1992. Now the primo Upper Deck card to have from that original set was #1 Ken Griffy Jr.
As far as Canseco goes, the 1986 Topps Traded Set version (#20T) or the 1987 Fleer Update (also #20) set were the most valuable at the time.
