Bottles are glass, what's the problem? Now if it's a bpa lined can *gasp* that's another story.

No, I'm pretentious but not that pretentious.

People rag on Bourdain for drinking swill but his feeling is you "eat/drink what the people you're with are offering/having as to not offend them"

Sometimes I think people take this beer advocacy a bit too far. Yes, my last post was a sarcastic one, but seriously, the world isn't going to end if you drink from the bottle or can. In fact I have found some beers I prefer to consume from it's own vessel.

I would ask for a glass nicely. Most places accomodate this no problem.. means they probablly just havent been educated on craft beer and proper serving ettiquite for beer. If they give you an attitude about it, then just dont go back to that spot.

For those who said they would not return to the bar/restaurant if they were not initially offered a glass - seriously?

If I wanted a glass I would ask for a glass. If I did not care if I had a glass or actually felt like drinking it out of the bottle I would drink it out of the bottle. I would say 9 times out of 10 at a bar that doesn't automatically give you a glass I would be ordering something I have already had before or a session beer and have no problems drinking it out of a bottle. I usually only order drafts when Im out and they always come in glasses.

Same here. If I am at a bar I'd ask for one. If I am a guest in someone's home? It depends. Let's say I am at a new coworkers' house, someone I just met. If they give me the bottle, I may not ask for a glass. If I am at my close friends house and they give me a beer without a glass I would ask.

EDIT: I am laughing at the thought of being at a strangers' house and them handing me a 750ml of Saison Dupont without a glass. Uh oh! Better pop the top and drink it straight from the bottle, ha ha.

I DO NOT drink beers straight from the bottle. Cans are okay.

I've often found myself surprised at the juxtaposition between the craft beers a given venue carries and the seeming ignorance to bring a glass with the beer. This has happened to me a couple times over the past several months, once with a fairly nice restaurant that had Two-Hearted by the bottle and the other time it was with my local Alamo Drafthouse movie theater.

I was more surprised by the Alamo situation (also because it's happened at least 5 times now, leading me to believe that it's policy not to bring a glass with bottled beer), because they carry quite a selection of craft beers, including 750s and rotating taps. Those facts suggest to me that Alamo is, at the very least, trying to cater to people who like craft beer--hell, the name of their movie theater is "Drafthouse".

I'm sorry, but I just don't want to drink Rayon Vert or Three Philosophers out of the bottle and miss out on 50% of the wonderful flavors going on. I'm already paying $8 for a beer that I could buy at a liquor store for closer to $2-3, I don't think asking for a glass makes me pretentious or high-maintenance. Sure, it's not the end of the world if I have to drink a beer out of the bottle, but nothing we talk about on this site is that severe in the first place.

Whenever this thread comes up, and I see people acting like it's not a big deal to just go with the bottle, I have to ask--wouldn't most restaurants be appalled if a server brought someone's wine out without a glass? And before anyone points out that wine comes in 750 mL containers, it can also come in a carafe and even in single-serving bottles (like on planes), yet even in situations where those latter items are used, the wine *always* is accompanied by a glass. This is because aroma is a huge part of the drinking experience, and that truth is no different with beer.

Now when it comes to a beer offered by a friend or family member at their house, I'm a little less of a stickler. It depends on the exact situation, but I will usually try to request a glass from the host if I can do it without making a big deal and if the party/event that I'm at seems like I won't be a huge imposition by doing so. And if they ever give me a funny look, I'll usually laugh and say something along the lines of "Oh, no worries--I can manage. I'm kind of a freak when it comes to beer!" so that they don't feel like they are doing anything wrong by refusing my request.

add a lil more complexity to the question, to answer it honestly why don't you tell us where you are talking about and what exactly you were served?

I always ask for a glass. If it's a Bud Light, I politely ask what else they have to drink.

At a bar or restaurant, definitely ask for a glass.
At someone's place, I've found my best bet is to bring some beer with me and say "Hey, I brought some brew to share. Do have a glass handy?"
