Is it just me, or do all people care about now is If its sour, barrel aged, or low bottle count.. if its not, then they don't want it. Doesn't really make sense to me that people will pay $50 or more for a bottle, just because its "1 out of 200". Sure you can look "cool" having the bottle in the cellar, but that just shows what you think about the beer world, trying to be cooler than the next guy..

Sorry to rant, but had to put it out there. Carry on...

This one comes to mind. Yup, I want it. But it's $50 a bottle and small batch and it's probably awesome but 50 is crazy just to say you had a certain beer. There are occasions that you can let yourself go, maybe just buy an expensive 1 or 2 for yourself on your bday or Christmas? There are plenty of awesome beers under $5 to get through the rest of the year

I treat stuff like that as a one-time purchase and as a special treat. $50 ain't bad to have something once. Hell, I've dropped $150 on a utopias which is a very similar style of beer to the one you linked (which I've also had, along with the copper version). I've never bought any of these more than once though.

The baladin barleywines are excellent btw, and very unique. Worth trying, IMO. Even at the price point. Hard to find anything to compare it to really.

There are plenty of low bottle beers which you have never heard of which are terrible and no one cares about. If you make small batches, it is easier to set a standard than when brewing 100’s of Hl non-stop. A really good batch stands out & can be easily differentiated. Some beers really vary in quality & if they were released in limited batches, we could pick out the really good ones. Saision Dupont for instance, I have had anything from sub par bottles to basically the perfect beer a couple of times. This and the experience is of course a big part of the experience.

On BA people are to focussed on the above mentioned beers but the average beer enthusiast who never visits BA, rarely drinks this. We are just a skewed population.

All aboard the Hype Train. Next stop Beer Advocate.
    Here's a great example.

"This Friday the 28th of June, OB Noodle House will be tapping in the rarest beer and considered legendary from Goose Island....BOURBON COUNTY STOUT! We will be tapping it on our line starting at 6pm! On top of that, Goose Island IPA will be the $2 beer from 12pm to 5pm with only $7.50 for pitchers! See you Noodlers tomorrow bright and early!"

Just advertise the beer as "the rarest," that's all that needs to be said to bring people in.

I think a lot of times people just think screw it. I mean have you been to the beer store lately? Yesterday I bought some evil twin (not limited or rare in any way), 1 bomber and two singles and one other bomber. $32. $50 is not that much farther. Plus if it's a bottle that not a lot of people will have your review will be one of few instead of one of many. There are expensive liquors and wines that are worth the money at least once and same with beers. Not an everyday purchase for sure.

I like Festina Peche. I guess its slightly sour, but other than that, I don't think it qualifies.

    Your avatar is too soon.

On a real note, some of the best beers that I've had (all hype aside) have been low bottle count, barrel-aged sours.

I guess I don't see why it matters what someone else does with their money. With the amount of time and care it takes to make these beers, why wouldn't people want to drink them?

I dont know, while there are certain low count bottles I will seek (I've bought a $50 bottle once...Fou Foune) I usually won't spend more than 25 for a bottle. At the same time I get just as excited when fresh Flower Power or Mo shows up on the shelf.

I completely disagree. For some of us trying new beers is about experiencing something new. I don't see myself as buying $50 worth of beer but buying $50 of an experience I may never get to try again. Looking at it this way I think $50 is cheap for a new experience. This "hobby" is a LOT cheaper than dropping hundreds/thousands of dollars to travel/experience a foreign country.
