forgive me if i spelled this wrong, but what's with the sudden rush of offers for this beer? i knew it was always a bit on the whale radar, but lately it seems like people are going insane trying to get a bottle.

not that i could land one if i traded every bottle i had, but i'm curious.

Frankly, I think the word is getting out on the Uli blends in the upper echelon of the whale trading community and Eszett's stock is rising because of it. It seems like the people that have had Eszett want more and those that have been introduced to his Uli blends want to go back and try the Eszett, which they may have overlooked in their hunt. I recently had the luxury of trying a couple Uli blends (thanks Eric!) next to great Cantillon and 3F and Uli's stuff held it's own for sure. Personally, I'd generally rate his gueuzes (the two I've had so far) higher than Jean's and toe to toe with Armand's, who I've traditionally felt was the best gueuze blender in the world. That coupled with the incredibly low bottle counts on the Uli's, and Eszett, has .rar seekers tripping over whalez to get these bottles. I'd love to seek out a bottle of Eszett now but I'm just a small fish swimming with sharks.

If enough people offer big for them, the sheep will follow.

I always figure that even if there are very few bottles of a beer produced, it's not necessarily better than other beers. Apparently this one's pretty darn good, though. But yes, the rather amazing offers out there right now are sure to lead to lots of sad shelf-whales offers.

It's been out for a while, and people only started going apeshit for it very recently. My buddy had it, and he didn't even review it a 5/5 like everybody that reviewed Kentucky Brunch, so it can't really be that good.

I have been watching the shit show that is the trading forums lately, and it seems that the shepherd dictates to the herd what beers to chase and throw insane offers for. It's quite comical lately how bad it's gotten. Next weeks big hot shit is only a few insane trade posts away.

It's a marketplace, of a sort - its very existence creates demand. I don't know how many more people there are on BA than there were, say, back in 2007, but it seems like a lot more. So it's just bound to be a more intense environment.

That said, I'm glad I managed to trade for Peconic and BRL when they first were released - wouldn't have had the ammo to land them even after six months, the way they took off. Whew.

It's all about timing. When Eszett came out last year, I had a very hard time trying to trade for some rare beers. I offered them to a few tasting groups and most of them said no due to lack of information.

I remember somone trying to build some buzz around the 'ol Uli blends a couple of years ago with negative results...something about a blending event in CA maybe? I think it was before the site crash.

Seems like there's always a dragon to chase or a weens to measure.

I actually met CRooney, and he said that the goal with that was to get some Chocolate Rain (this was after the first bottling) because Uli made a great blend of it and 3F Cherry lambic. So he wanted to do some easy trades to get more. It's kinda funny, because at the time everyone seemed to write off Uli, now the blends are all whales. I guess he just needed to wait a couple years...

(He also opened up a bottle of a blend with me, it was awesome. I wish Uli would go professional, he clearly knows what he's doing.)

Since this? Its been over two years. More importantly, where was the DQ I'd just opened and why wasn't I holding it?
